The Temuka Leader THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 1890. ST. SAVIOUR’S CHURCH.
The result of all the negotiations to erect a new Espiecopaliau Church in Temuka is that no church will be erected. This is a very regrettable termination. Mr Haybur-t’a offer practically amounted to £3OO, the outside public-—that is members of other churches—promised subscriptions to about a similar amount. Thus the congregation had really given to them £6OO to begin with, and besides they had £l5O cash in hand. !hey had to collect amongst themselves about £450 in order to build the church, and this they have not done. The great excuse they have had was the change of site. WA have given our opinion on this subject already, so it is no use repeating it, Perhaps it might have been better had Mr Hayhurst given his donation unconditionally, but of course he was perfectly justified in doing wbat he did. We may say that we do not blame him for withdrawing his offer now. He gave plenty of time to think over it. He went to England and came back and found the matter still unsettled, and it was no wonder that he felt tired of it. The result is at any rate regrettable. The loss to the church is considerable because it is not likely that -VI r Hayhurst will be in a hurry to make such an offer again, and after what has happened it is doubtful whether such a large mea-mre of assist urne can be obtained from the genera! public on any future occ-m-iu I hu«t; . h<i cauvas-ed for subscriptions wt • surprised rfc the j very liber *) main ui which in embers I of other denom iatio 'ubsmbod. i ■* may do sfc. /, u - <• urco con I gr- gati h. - ,u-- ymd ) know nab j this liberality io due to the personal
popularity of the Incumbent of the i parish. Let them make no mistake on this head. The Rev. M r Hamilton is not only respected but beloved by all classes, and the liberality of outside subscribers was due to' the great esteem in which he is held. However, it is no use to pursue the subject further. It is now a thing of the past. The project has simply been strangled ; there was not the slightest difficulty in the way, and those who are responsible for it will live to regret their action.
