News has been received that the British cruiser Conquest, 14 guns, 2380 tons, has gone ashore on the Island of Piemba, off the Zanzibar coast.
It is rumored that a ring has been formed to corner (ho hematite; market, and close the furnaces till the stocks on hand sre sold.
The men who were locked out by the Metropolitan Gas Company, and lost their work in consequence of the unsuccessful agitation against the company, are appealing for relief.
Miss Cobden .has taken her seaton the London County Council, despite the decision of the Courts disqualifying women as County Councillors, on the ground that the time has not expired in which her right to the seat could be challenged.
Feb. 14, Carl Sydney, aged 85, is dead, Paris, Feb. 18.
At his trial the Due d’Grleans made no defence to the charges laid against him, but said that he was confident of the sympathy of 200,000 conscripts. The sentence of two years’ imprisonment was received with murmurs, and over 1000 peeple invaded the precincts of the Court,shouting “ Vive le Due d’Orleans ; down with the Republic,” Twenly-five of those taking part in tho Royalist demonstration were placed nnder arrest. The crowd renewed the disorder around the statue of Henry IV. The Due d’Orleans was removed to the Conciergerie (State prison).
The Due d’Orleans has decided not to appeal against bis sentence, Berlin, Feb. 13.
The Italian Government has agreed to the proposal of the Emperor William of Germany for a Labor Conference, and it is believed that Austria and England ere disposed to join. The Stradtsratb, over which the Emperor will preside, has been summoned for Friday, to prepare a proposal to be submitted to the Conference.

Those, placed on trial for attempting to bribe jurors on the Cronin murder trial have pleaded guilty, and sentence has been deferred.
AUSTRALIAN CABLE.
Sydney, Feb. 15
Reports to hand state that the American schooner Tierdom capsized in November last among the Solomon Islands during a severe gale. Thirteen islanders who were passengers by her ware battened down, and when the vessel capsized they were unable to gain their freedom. The crew made every effort to release the unfortunate beings, but were compelled to leave them to their fate.
