NEATH FIRE AND FLAIL.
To all comes an hour of rejoicing, Rut to each comes a day of woe, When the heart through the furnace of pain Alone and unaided must go.
When we sing, there are many to join us, If we sigh, it is lost in the air, There’s sorrow enough on every side And alone we must each bear our share.
We have friends to rejoice in our j>ay. There are many to help us to laugh, But alone wo must pass 'neath the flail Where the grain is freed from the chaff.
Ah ma ! where the trial is over, Then life never more is the same, Our idol lies shattered and broken, Weie it love, or riches, or fame.
But none nan escape this trial Alone, we must each take our stand," And pass ’neath the breath of the God Where tha gold is freed from the sand
And when we leave these halls of pain borne sears are deap and wide, But still in the blast of the furnace, Must every heart be tried. Maurice Oeme, Tokonui
