Fletcher, of Tetmika, who is at present working on Contract No, 2 of this race, is also the successful tenderer for Gontraci No. 3 of the same work. Gambling. —The police made a raid on Burton s tobacconist's shop, Wellington, and thirteen persons were taken into custody. Henry Burton, the proprietor is charged with keeping a gamiog house! and the others with being illegally on the premises of a gaming house. Railway Employes.— According to the report of a meeting held last week in Christchurch 4000 members have been enrolled in the Railway Employes Union, i hey propose to co-operafe with oilier Labor&ra Unions. Knights of Labor. —The organising agent of the Knights of Labor, Dyobt, is surprised at the importance of that organisation in this colony. A Fruadulent Church Treasurer,— At the adjourned meeting of St, Paul’s Church, Dunedin, a report was brought up as to the defalcations by the late IJeasurer, G. H. Ashcroft, who recently committed suicide. The report stated that the frauds extended from the time of his appointment, four years ago, and involved a loss to the Church funds of more than £1750. They were perpetrated so skillfully as to escape detection. Cutting it Fine.— Dr Lawson made a personal application to the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board on last Friday for permission to procure a silver plate necessary to cure a lad named Powell who is suffering from having his skull fractured. One would think the Doctor would have power to provide a thing like that without going to the necessity of applying to the board for it. Mr McJLaren was absent from the board and Dr Lawson got permission to procure the silver plate. Noble Sentiments. —Judge Williams at the New South Wales banquet in Dunedin recently, said ;—“ The unforgivable sin for an English speaking man is, whether for party purposes or to gratify personal spleen, to do, write , or say anything which may tend to cause irritation between one branch of the English speaking race and another. Whether we are from the British Isles or Australia or New Zealand or America, before all we are brothers. From each is due to the other, not contempt or arrogant self-assertion, but goodwill, patience, and forbearance.”

Regatta.—A stiff nor-’eaater ioterfered with the success of the Dunedin Regatta last Saturday. The Ships’ Gig Race, prizss £7 and £2, was won by the Taranaki boat, with the Levuka second. The champion first-class yacht race resulted in a win for Pastime, Lyttelton; Ripple, Dunedin, 2. To the second class yacht race, Goldsaeker, Dunedin, was first ; Dream, Wellington, second ; and the third class yacht was won by the Gem, Dunedin, with Yladge second. Open boat sailing race—Skater, 1. Champion naval pinnance race—Port Chalmers, 1 ; Lyttelton Navals, 2 ; Dunedin 3. Open boat sailing race, second class, Jane 1. Owing to the breeze the rowing events were postponed. Judicial Quarrel. —At the NTative Land Court, Gisborne, on Thursday, during the progress of an important Waipawa case. Judge Wilson showed an objection to the questions put to witnesses by his colleague, Judge Barton, and intimated that unless certain conduct was desisted, he would report the matter, and would withdraw from the ctse. On Friday morning Judge Barton intimated that he treated Wilson’s words as threats, and having carefully considered his position, he had decided to withdraw from the case. The litigants have wired to the Chief Justice, pointing out the injustice that will be done them and the expense incurred, unless anether Judge is apnointed at once.

Distinguished Strangers.— The Otago Daily Times says ; We have had amongst us the last few days, his Highness Kumar Shri Bharsinghi, Prince of Porbandar (Bombay Presidency), and his companion O Shea and suite. They were all delighted with Dunedin and its surroundings, and have seen nothing to equal the sounds of New Zealand. The prince, who is only 23 years of age, speaks English perfectly but is very reserved and quiet in manner. On all State occasions in India the prince is saluted with 13 guns a guard of honour of 200 strong. On Thursday they drove down to Port Chalmers with a few friends and departed by the Te Anau for Melbourne en route to Bombay.

Bank of New Zealand.— At a general meeting of the shareholders of the Bank of New Zealand held at Auckland on last Friday, a resolution was carried transfering the head office and general management of the bank to London. Several other resolutions of a technical nature so as to amend the deed of settlement in accordance with the change were carried carried after a lengthy discussion. The larger part of the shareholders live in this colony, almost all the business of the bank is done here, and it is a painful reflection that men cannot be found here to manage it. It is the same class of men who have ruined the Bank of New Zealand, dominate politics in this colony, and the result is the colony is as badly managed as the bank.

The Presbaterian' Assembly. —At the Presbyterian Assembly list Saturday the report on the state of religion and morals was _ read. The report concluded by making the following resolutions (1) Chat Presbyteries be instructed to" hold conferences on the state of religion and morals within their bounds, and report to the committee. (2) That ministers and preachers be enjoined to direct special attention to the evils of gambling, mail desecration, and social impurity, (o) Chat Presbyterians be requested to arrange for special mission services in as the congregations as possible.
