PARNELL AND THE TIMES.
London, Feb. 11. Sir W. V. Harcourt in the Houae of Commons moved that the pablication of the forged Pnrnell letters by the Times was a breach of privilege. Sir J. Gorst moved as an amendment that the House declines to treat tho matter as a breach of privilege. Mr Parnell was re-elected chairman and Mr Justin McCarthy vice-chairman of the Irish Party. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Parnell said he had never treated his action against the Times as a personal grievance. He brought it because he felt it was necessary to remove the slur cast indirectly on the Irish race. A resolution congratulating Mr Parnell on his victory was enthusiastically carried.
Feb. 12. Sir W. T. Harcourt's motion was defeated, on a division, by 260 to 212. Mr Gladstone and Mr Albert Bright supported Sir William Vernon Harcourt's motion about the forged Parnell letters. Mr Smith, leader of the House of Commons, accepted a suggestion by Mr Parnell that he should insist on the admission of the forgeries by way of an amendment to the Address in Reply, and congratulated the hon. gentleman on his innocence being proved, Mr Parnell, in the course of the debate, accused Government of incredible meanness and cowardice, and he caneluded with moving an amendment to the Address with a view of raising tho whole question of Irish Administration.
