Legislative Council, —lt ia officially stated no calls wi 1 be made to the Legislative Council this recess. The Exhibition. —The Exhibition haa now been opm eleven weeks, and the attendance h*a now reached 344,298, including 217,110 who paid cash at the doors. The reciepts now exceed £15,000. Geraldine Public Sports. An adjourned meeting of those interested in holding the annual public sports at Geraldine takes place at the Crown Hotel, Geraldine, to-morrow evening at 7.30 p.m. Land Settlement. —During January 107 selectors took up 26,923 acres of land, the bulk, over 20,000 acres, being on perpetual lease. This is a considerable improvement over last month and over the same month last year. Pardons Wanted. —Tho Auckland Ministers Association have appointed a SuffOomraitfee to draw up a petition asking Parliament to emphasise the clebration of the jubilee of the colon} 7 oy granting a pardon to those deserving it amongst the prisoners at present in ga»l in New Zeal«sd.

iMr B. L- Stevenson. —News from Samoa states that Mr R. L. Stevenson, the author of “Dr. Jakyll and Mr Hyde,” treasure Island,’ etc., has boon there for some months, and, finding tha c iuiate agreeing wonderfully well with him, ha has bought 400 acres of land and intends to build a house.

_WILD Sheep.— Active measures are b'-ing taken by the Stock Department for the destruction of wild sheep. Canterbury is now practica'ly free from them, and no fewer than 783 have been killed in the Nelson forests during the last few weeks. Ad the shsep destroyed in Nelson have been found quite clean. Sale at Woobside, Geraldine.— Attention is directed to the important clearing sale of live and dead farm stock, furniture, etc., to-morrow, by Messrs J. Mundell and Co., on account of Mr W. 0. Slack, at Woodside, Geraldine. The sale offers a rare opportunity to farmers and others, and should not be missed, A start will be made at 12 o’clock, luncheon being provided.

G©ld Discovery. —A gold discovery is reported from Queensland which savours in some degree of romance. Two miners were withdrawing from a district which they had been prospecting in vain, when one of them stopped to look at » dower. The other, meantime, was idly chipping a rock, and found it rich in gold. The result is said to be the discovery of a reef of which wonders are predicted. The claim has been named the Orchid after the lucky flower. It is situated in tha Mackay district.

Letter From Major Kemp, The Governor has received a letter from Major Kemp, which shows that the relations between his Excellency and that chief are of the moat friendly character. The letter, which is written to the Native Minister and was forwarded to Lord Onslow, is as follows :—“ Auckland Friend, Salutations to you. My heart has expeiienced much pleasure in rece'ving your letter, that is, the letter from yourself and the Governor, Earl Onslow, acknowledging the receipt of my address to Queen Victoria, and Tam very thankful to you (olural) for your agreeing to my wishes. Friend, please explain this to the Governor. Am exceedingly gratified at his reply to me, and that he has acceded to my request, and also at the other words in his letter. May he and his countess and his family live long. I hav e explained all this mat'er to ray (ribs.”

Temuka Mechamics’ Institute. The monthly meeting of the Temuka Mechanics’ Institute Committee wns held on Tuesday evening. Present—Messrs J. Blyth (President), Andrews, J. Sim' W. Storey, sen., G. Me. S. Gentleman! J. McOaskill, J. Bari, H. M. Miles, ami W. Storey, jnn. ihe librarian handed in his monthly report, and cash amounting to £4 IDs, It was decided to repair the fence ; also to continue to subscribe to the Australasian. Offers fjom Mr Hopkinson and Mrs Koscoe for (be purchase of Chambers' Journal and Reynolds’ Newspaper, 6s each, were accepted. The Secretary was instructed to prepara a list of papers for Bale. After a lengthy discussion as to finances, on the motion of Mr Miles, seconded by Mr Storey, sen., Messrs Rutland, Andrews, Sim, and McUaskill were appointed a sab-committee to moke the necessary airaugements for holding a concert as early as_ possible. Accounts amonnting to £4 8s were passed for payment. A vote of thanks to the president terminated the meeting. The Primacy.— -The' Anglican Bishop of Nelson, as primate, has given notice that he is making preparations for the consecration of Archdeacon Julius to the bishopric of Christchurch on April 25, and the responsibility for delay must rest on the right parties. Meanwhile the Bishop of Wellington is earnestly considering the several courses of action he has been urged to take, and wishes a short apace of time for deliberation and counsel. He is to meet the Bishops of Auckland and Waiapu at Napier on February 17, the Bishop of Auckland being en route for Dunedin to attend the meeting of the University Senate, It is possible, also, Dean Ho veil, Archdeacon W, L. Williams, and Mr Arthur J. Oocerill, the chancellor of the diocese of Waiapu, may be present and take part in the conference. The Bishop of Wellington will be prepared to take any course which may appear to the majority of his right reverend brethren to be for the good of the church at the present crisis. It is understood further that the Bishop of Auckland has a plan to propose to the conference on February 17, which he confi ieotly believes will lead to a solution of the difficulty without entailing the necessity of a special session of the General Synod being held.

The Wevther. —A splendid rain commenced falling in the district on Tuesday evening, and continued daring the night and yesterday. The rain will do an immense amount of good to the grass land and young turnips, both of which were suffering severely from the long continuance of dry weather. Canterbury Rabbit Fence.— Mr Foster, sheep inspector of the Canterbury district, has reported to the Minister of Lands that he recently inspected the country in the vio'nity of the South Canterbury rabbit fence. He states that the rabbits are not spreading in that locality, and is of opinion that if the present supervision is maintained there is very little danger of their getting over into Canterbury.
