Mr Spawn, the American fruit expert, has been unsuccessful at Wellington in getting a company floated to utilise his inventions. A young woman named Eliza Nicholla, a dressmaker, living by herself at_ Carterton, Wellington, was found in her residence strangled. Evidently the case is one of suicide. From the appearance of the body when discovered ifc is believed that death occurred a fortnight ago, No cause is assigned, and the deceased was a Btranger in the district. By the last three direct steamers heavy exports of butter were sent Home from Wellington. One merchant alone despatched 6350 packages, each from 601 bto 801 b, All came from Wairarapa and Taranaki. A woman who had just given birth to a child was found on the town belt, Dunedin, on Thursday. She was too weak to reply to any questions, and the only thing ascertained was that her name was Campbell. A sbark, i 7 feet in length, was | captured just outside the Dunedin Heads. It was of the "whip tail" species—very rare here. Captain Lewis of the barque Janet Eamsay, attempted to commit suicide at Dunedin on Thursday morning by cutting his throat. (Since the commencement of the Court case (a claim for damages by two seamen whom he left for three months on the Macquarries.) Captain Lewis has been j despondent consequent on the pro- ! ceedings and fearing their result, ; Two days before he took a quantity of laudanum, which did no more than make him sick, His windpipe is partly severed, but though the wound is dangerous the doctors think he will i recover. &ome rather startling facts , came out at the adjourned hearing of the case against Lewis. James Sutherland gave evidence that after leaving the M acquarries they went to Campbell Islands, where four weeks were spent sealing. The weather was fine, and there was nothing to prevent their going to Macquarrie. The case was adjourned until the 14th inst.
