Very large sharks hare been about the fishing grounds outside the Dunedin Heads during tjie past few days, greatly annoying the fishermen. On Manday a monster attacked the boat of a man named Bennie, knocking out the stern. The other fishermen came to the rescue of their comrade. Two boys, Irnest Mills and Hobt. Eeed, from Lyttelton Orphanage, have joined H.M.S. Orlando at their own request. The warship Orlando was docked at Auckland on Monday for cleaning and painting. The vessel will take in some 1200 tons of Westport coal, and will leave for Australian waters in about a wpek. It is estimated that there will be a surplus of £3OO from the Jubilee festival at Auckland.
The Southern Harbor works contract at Greymouth is finished.
A boy about twelve years of age, son of Kobert Park, and nephew of the well-known canoeist, was drowned at Hokitika on Monday night. He was in a boat with his father and another man. The current carried the boat over the bar, and the deceased was drowned in the surf. The two men were rescued.
At Clyde, Otago, the proprietors of the Cromwell Brewery Company were fined £SO for a breach of the Beer Duty Act. Hayera and Beck were also fined £SO for a similar offence.
Large numbers are joining the Tailors and Prossers Union at Auckland.
John Hunter was killed by a fall of earth in Paddy’s Alley, at the Hbkowai goldfield, Southland, on Tuesday afternoon. He was a married man, and leaves a wife and two children.
The Prospectors’ Company at Nonthorne, Otago, obtained 98oz. of retorted gold from 100 tons of stono. The Big Beach Cempany obtained 2470z5. for a fortnight’s work.
