' A five-roomed house in Devon street, East, New Plymouth, was burned early on Saturday morning. The insurances amount to £l5O. The Government have decided to I issue railway passes to the members of Eire Brigades who intend taking part in the demonstration at Wellington. It is estimated that 30,000 people attended the Jubilee sports at Auckland on Saturday. The Governor and suite were present, and the Waikato Natives presented a loyal address. At Nelson on Saturday a fire occurred at the Botanical Gardens. Captain Lightfoot, of the fire brigade, hurried to the scene, and after running some distance got into a cab, in which, on arrival at the fire, he • was found dead. Stoppage of the heart’s action was the cause of death. At Wellington, Henry White, Secretary of the Foresters’ Art Union, in connection with the Boxing Day sports, was fined £1 and costs for assisting in an illegal lottery, and having illegally sold lottery tickets. A telegram from New Plymouth on Sunday says:—“ Large fires are raging for a distance of nearly forty miles through the bush district lying between New Plymouth and Te Eoti. New Plymouth is enveloped in smoke, and a heavy south-westerly gale is blowing. Several settlers have been burnt out near the Junction road, and the town of ingiewood is in danger, ihe Waiongona railway bridge caught fire, but the railway workmen succeeded in extinguishing the flames. The settlers have suffered heavy loss in grass seed, and are experiencing an anxious time, for if the gale does not abate soon the damage by the fire will be most extensive.”
