CHRISTCHURCH STOCK MARKETS. At the Addington Yards on Wednesday the sale was of a poor description, all sorts of stock being scarce, and buyers likewise. Fat Cattle—The entry was made up of a few lines of first-class beasts, which .met with but poor inquiry. A line of magnificent steers from Kaituna were brought under the hammer, but failed to realise the owner’s reserve. They were afterwards sold privately at hardly I3s per 1001 b. Best beef made from 13s to 15s per 1001 b, and inferior sorts from lls to 12s 6d. Fat Sheep—A poor entry, and last ! week’s prices were not maintained. The demand for freezers was again keen; Crossbred wethers in several cases made up to Ms sd, and ewes were disposed of at from 9s to 13s 9d. Best mutton may be quoted at a trifle .over 2d per lb, while inferior was sold from upwards. 71 crossbred wethers from the Orari Estate sold at 12s, and crossbred ewes at 9s. Store Sheep Slightly better demand. Hoggets made up to 8s 6d; crossbred wethers to lls; do ewes to 8sFat Lambs—The entry of fat lambs was made up, to a large extent, of stock which might have come under the heading of fat sheep. A li ue of enormous lambs made up to 15s a head, while other sorts made from 7s fid to 10s each. DUNEDIN PRODUCE MARKETS. The following is the report for the week ending Wednesday:— Wheat—Business in this cereal has not increased during the past week. Milling wheat is now offered at less than market quotations to induce business, but there are no buyers. Prime milling tuscan, 3s to 3s Id; best red straw and velvet, 2s 9d to 2s lid; medium to good, 2s fid to 2s 9d; inferior to medium, 2s to 2s 6d (ex store), Oats—The market is still over supplied, and being weekly supplemented by fresh deliveries. Prime milling, Is to Is fid •, best short bright feed, Is 5d to Is s^d; medium to good, Is 4d to Is 5d ; musty and discolored, 9d to Is 3d (ex store, sacks weighed in). Barley—There is little or nothing doing in this cereal, pending the arrival of the new crop. Grass Seeds—Ryegrass, 2s fid to 3s; cocksfoot, to 3^d. Pigs—Owing to the heat no demand, about 3£d; hams, 8d; rolls and flitches, fid. Chaff—£2 15s to £3 7s fid. Straw, oaten and wheaten, 355. Clover and ryegrass hay, £3 ss. Butter—Salt, nominal; fid for best. Eggs, scarce. Honey, 4|d. Cheese: Old factory, 3|d; new, 4fd ■ new Akaroa, to 4d. Sheepskins—On Tuesday dry crossbreds sold at 2s 7d to fia 3d; do merinos, 2s Id to 5s 8d; do pelts, 2d to Is 2d; green pelts, lOd to 2s 3d ; do lambs’, Is 8d to 2s 3d. . Hides—Prime heaviest, 2|d to 3d per lb; medium to heavy, 2id to 2|d ; light and inferior, Ifd to 2d. There are no signs of any improvements in value. Tallow Prime rendered mutton, 18s fid to 20s per cwfc; medium, 16s to 17s fid ; inferior, 12s fid to 15s; best mutton cauls, 12s fid to 13s fid; medium, lls to 12s; inferior, 10s to lls. DUNEDIN STOCK MARKET. At the Burnside Yards on Wednesday the following business was transacted r Fat Cattle—2o4 head were yarded. A large proportion were heavy-weight bullocks in prime condition, the balance consisting of medium to inferior bullocks and heifers. Bidding was exceedingly languid, and prices ruled from 5s to 10s a head lower than last week. Best bullocks sold at £6 to £7 15s ; ordinary, £5 10s to £fi; cows and heifers, £2 5s to £5 15s. Among the sales made was one from the trustees Orari estate, 6 prime steers at from £5 15s to £5 10s. Fat Sheep —3194 yarded, about 60 of which were merinos. There was a serious fall in value of best mutton, none being bought for shipping. Bidding was very slow right through the sales, prices ruling from Is 6d to 2s per head lower than last week. Best wethers sold at 10s to 12s 3d ; ordinary 9s to 10s ; best ewes, 8s fid to 10s 3d ; ordinary, 5s 9d to 7s 9d : merino wethers, 6s to 8s fid. Among the lines sold were two for the Hon. W. Rollestou, 41 crossbred wethers at ss, and 27 crossbred ewes at 8s fid. Fat Lambs With the exception of a pen or two these were all well bred lambs in good to prime condition. There was a fairly brisk demand; prices ruling much the same as last week. Best pens, 7s fid to 8s fid; ordinary, 5s to fi's 9d ; a few extra prime up to lls 9d. Pigs—l 37 yarded,, consisting principally of suckers and porkers, with a few pens baconers. Bidding was quiet. Suckers sold at 8s to 14s; stores, 15s to 24s ; porkers, 26s to 345; baconers, 46s to 575; a few extra heavy up to 635. INVERCARGILL WOOL SALES. The second series of wool sales on Thursday attracted a large attendance of foreign buyers. The bidding for crossbred wools was spirited. Merino

was neglected, but, on the whole, prices were equal to those reported at recent colonial sales. For strong wool top values were obtained. Light greasy crossbreds showed -|d to better than last sale. In heavy and irregular there was a slight decline. AUSTRALIAN MARKETS. Sydney, Jan. 80. Chickwheat, 2s to 2s 9d, scarce; milling sorts, 3s 4d to 3s 7d. Flour, stone made, £9 15s; roller made, £lO. There is very little sale for New Zealand flour. Oats, feeding sorts, 2s to 2s 2d; milling sorts, 2s 4d. Maize, 3s 2d to 3s 4d. Bran is scarce at 7d to at 7£d to Bd. Potatoes, local grown, £3; New Zealand grown, £3 10s; onions, £4 10s. Butter, dairy made, fid ; factory made, Bd. Cheese is dull at 3d to fid. Bacon, machine cured, to roll, 7d to 7^d; band cured, 7d to 8d ; New Zealand, 9d to Hams, New Zealand, lOd to Is. At the wool sales to-day, 1600 bales were offered, and 1200 sold. Inferior to good greasy realised 7£d to 10£d ; inferior to medium washed 13|d to average to good scoured 17-id to 20id. Melbourne, Jan. 29. Wheat, new, 3sj7d; old, 3s Bid. Fleur is quiet; stone brands, £8; roller, £9 and upwards. Oats, local, 2s fid ; stout, 2s lOd; New Zealand, 3s 4d. Maize, 3s lOd. Barley, feeding, 2s lOd. Bran, 10£d. Sugar, Mauritius white, £24 ss; Adelaide, Jan. 29. Wheat, shipping parcels, 8a fid. Flour, stone brands, £8 15s; roller, £9 10s. Oats, New Zealand, 3s 3d. Barley at 4s 5d to 4s 9d, is difficult of sale. Bran, 7d. Pollard, Bd. ENGLISH MARKETS. London,, Jan. 29. The first of this year’s series of wool sales began to-day. The catalogue comprised 56,000 bales. There was a full attendance, and good biddings. Good Australian merino and . crossbreds are unchanged and firm. Inferior sorts are 5 per cent lower. The second series will begin alter Easter.
