CHRISTCHURCH CORN EXCHANGE
The following is the Corn Exchange report for the week ending Friday,
Jan. 31st, 1890 : Ihe reports reaching us from
country districts are hardly so favorable as were anticipated, the weather having had a bad effect on the crops
in some localities. Cutting is general, and threshing oats has begun, though
up to the moment but few samples
have been on offer. As far as can be judged, prices must open at a low figure for both wheat and oats. For the latter there is really no apparent market, and the United Kingdom is at present the only visible outlet for
our wheat. It it yet too early to write of the barley crop. Few samples of ryegrass have been offering,
farmers being too much engaged otherwise to devote attention to getting the small seeds on to the market. Cocksfoot—The season would appear to have been against threshing,
the cloudy days being doubtless a drawback. The few samples offered are no criterion of the season’s crop.
The following are our quotations for the week:—
