Incident in a Church. A very unusual incident occurred at the mornin» a Tvice in the Moray Place Congregational Church on Sunday morning. The Kev. Mr CVcil, preaching on 11 The Sabbath,” expressed himself as inclined to favor the opening of public parks, museums, and art galleries on Sunday, when a wellknown member of the church rose and protested against such views being put forward, adding that the preacher ought 'O be ashamed to advocate such a course. 1 here was a painful silence for a few seconds, but the Rev. Mr Cecil proceeded with his remarks and nothing further occurred
Temuka Town Board. a special meeting was held in the Town Board office lust Tuesday evening. Present Messrs K. F. Cray (chairman), Ooira, Clinch, and Blyth. The chairman explained that the special meeting was called to
consider anil discuss the necessary arid Fgil Steps lo bo taken in furtheraoce of toe sch' me for the effbciud drainage and water supply of the Temuka Town Disnict, as expressed by a large majoiity at a pub'ic meeting held in the Volunteer Hall on the evening of the 16th ins’. After Hie perusal of sundry Acts the fol--1 owing resolutions were passed Proposed by Mr Blyth, seconded by Mr Clinch, and cairied unanimously intention of this board to borrow £3OOO for the purpose of carrying out a water supply and drainage scheme for the town iiisinet of Temuka, and that a poll of ratepayers he taken on a day to be named, and that the same be advertised ■vnlnn the town district once in each week for four consecutive weeks.” Proposed by Mr B.ytfi, seconded by Mr Coira, aud cairied—“ that the chairman be empowered to take any legal advice he may deem necess <ry for effectually carrying out the above scheme, prior to a pod bain® demanded from the ratepayers of this district.” The board thee adjourned. Temuka Floral and Horticultbral Society. —A committee meeting of the above society was held on Tuesday night, the president in the chair, and a good number of members present. Air A. E. G, Rhodes a prize of one guinea w-is awarded to Mr G. 11. Patrick, as the most succesful amateur at, the f'mw, his score being 88 punl-i, -vtt J. W. Pye second wi;h 52 points. Mr J. Dow’s prize of a cmnry, value i at 15a, for the most successful amateur in fruit and vegetables in class B was aw.rded to Mr G. H. Patrick, his score hemg 34 points, Mr Py E! second with 32 points. Mr T. Abbott’s prize of 6 pot plants for the most successful exhibitor ,-.t the show whs awarded to Mr G. H. Patrick, who scored 88 points, Mr F." Saunders second with 8C points. Tha chairman at this st'ge of ilie proceedings had to leave the meeting, and Mr W. G. Rutland was voted to the chair, j Several accounts wore pissed for payment, and a few others left tor the secretary to settle. It was carried unanimously that Messrs boulter and Hooper receive a bonus each of 10 , for work done in preparing the driltshod for the show and clearing up the day after, and that the sum af three guineas be presented to the secretary for lus valuable services in connection with the inauguration of the society, and the success of th» Ide show. Moved by Mr Clinch, seconded by Mr Sanndcis “ That ajhcarty vote of thanks be accorded to the judges and others for their assistance on the day of the (Ton, and that the same be put on the minutes.” Wednesday, F e b. 5, in i three following days were appointed for paying over prizes the secretary’s office. Ttie secretary was instructed to cad a meeting of the committee about the end of February. The raeotiug then closed with the usin' vote of thanks to the chair.
