PEEL FOREST HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
President—Bon. J, B, A. Acland. Vice Presidents—G. J. Dennistoun, Eeq., A, Hawdon, Eeq,, and R, H, Irvine, Esq. Committee Messrs W, B Barker, Jas. Pithie, F. Quinn,’ R,' Thew, H. «owerby, F. Newman, Rae, and C. Teny. Treasurer—- • W. Johnston. Secretary—o. G. Roskruge, The annual exhibition underthe auspices of the above society took place in the Scotaburu Schoolroom on Friday last. The weather was somewhat dull, and threatened rain, consequently the attendance was not so large as usual, but at the same time there was a fair number of persons present. Taken us a whole, the show was not quite equal to that of previous years. One of the causes leading to this was that a number of exhibits arrived after the hour fixed for receiving them, and consequently could be admitted for exhibition only. Some of the exhibitors who came late were dissatisfied with this, and took their exhibits away again, whilst others placed theirs in the roam fpr exhibition. A good deal of grumbling was indulged in, but the committee had no opt'pn in the matter. Last year the hour fixed for receiving the exhibits was ten o'clock, and then many pajno late. This year it was decided to plose at eioyen punctually, apd due notice >yas given of the arrangement. Those ijyho were in time notified the committee that they should protest against any exhibit being received after the specified time. There is no doubt the firm stand taken by the committee will have the effect of securing punctuality at future shows. Many of the exhibits that had to ■ _|jo refused Were undoubtedly of a firat- ▼ " class order, and, had they competed, would in 'some cases have caused an in the prize list. Among lbs articles brought to the hall purely for exhibition was a fine collection of vegetables from the Hon. J. B, A. Acland’?. Mr W. Cooling also had some very large rhubarb, and Mr G. H. Patrick some tampting-loeking cucumbers, Mr Barker also had some nice plums on exhibition!
fhe collection of dessert and cooking apples with which be secured first prize was also a very complete one. Mr M. Coombs exhibited a nice box and Mr Patrick a nice bouquet of cat flowers. The display of vegetables was a very creditable one, and would no doubt be better if the show were held about a month later, as the P.el Forest district is about three weeks behind this district with regard to the seasons. The pot pi mis were grouped close together, and made a very f,ir display. Mrs Irvine was thu highest pnzeL.ker here, seeming both the first and the special prizes for the best collar thin of pot plants. In the gardemrs’ class Mess's G. 11. Patrick, W. K. Barker, and W. Rot were the largest prz-ilakers, while in the amateurs’ c'»ss Mr* Sowerby, W. Johnston, R. Tbrov, u'.d F. Newman were the the moat successful. A refreshment stall, which was under the supervision of the Misses Acland, appeared to be well patronised. The judges were ; Messrs J. Pye, M, Coombs, and W. Cooling, The secretary, Mr 0. G. Roskruge, who was courteous and obliging to all, had taker, care to have everything arranged in firstclass order—a fact which added not a little to the success of the show and the enjoyment of those visiting it.
