Nrw Justice of tub Peace.— The Gazpte of the 23rd inst. contains a bet of newlyappointed justices of the peace, amongst whom we notice the name of Mr Michael Quinn, of Temuka. Racks at Rangitata, — A public meeting of persona interested in the annual Easter race meeting at RengtiU Bridge will be held at Mr Wheelband’s Rangitata Bridge Hotel on Saturday evening, the Ist February, 7.30. Temuka Floral and Horticultural Society. Persons having accounts against this society are requested to render them before 6 o’clock this evening. A special committee meeting takes place in the Sooial Hall at 8 o clock. Jubilee ot the Colony. To-morrow being the Jubilee of the Colony will be observed generally as a holiday, all Government offices being closed. In our advertising columns appear advertisements stating that in Temuka and Geraldine the day will be observed as a close holiday. Tenders. There were in all 13 or 14 tenders for the Temuka and Geraldine Agricultural and Pastoral Assooiation’s paddock, near Winchester. The fesnder of Mr John Bennett, at 34s per acre, was accepted. The fact that such a high price was given shows the earth hunger is as strong as ever. R.M. Court, Temuka. —At the above court, yesterday, before J. T. M. Hay hurst, Esq., J.P., Robert Fenton was brought up charged with having on 'the 23rd assaulted, with intant to do her grievous bodily harm. Mary Bates. The accused was remanded until next Saturday, bail being allowed, himself m £IOO and two sureties of of £SO each. Tea Meeting and Lecture,— This events a taa meeting, followed by a lecture bv the Rev B. F, Rothwell, will take place in the Wesleyan Church, Temuka. Anyone attending will be sure to receive a first 'class tea and hear a good lecture interspersed with appropriate music. As a charge of only Is 6d is to be made for admission the church should bo crowded.

TuMUEi Rifles,—Members are reminded that a Government inspection parade takes place to-morrow eyening at a quarter-past 6 o clock. This early hour is fixed to suit the convenience of members. Thera are vacancies for a few recruits, and persons willing to ioia are requested to attend at the drilled the same evening between 7 and 8 o’clock, or communicate with the officer commanding before the end of the month.

Railway Employes Bill.—The Railway Commissioners have issued a circular asking the employes to record their vote upon the Government Railway Employdi Insurance iiill. As now submitted it contains a clause enabling anyone by giving three months’ notice to claim exemption from ils provisions If the reply is favourable the Oommissioneifs will recommend the Government to proceed with the Bill next session.

Thh Paynes. The Payne Family of musicians, who appear at Temuka again on i. iiursday night, are now giving lheir farewe] , performances in the colony. The tour, which has been a great success, will conclude at Invercargill on the 21st March, and the iamily play the Faster season in their native ~ Baßart, Victoria- Residents in the Geraldine district should not forget that the l!amuy appear m the Volunteer Hall tomorrow evening,

• T ? E > CtHOUa.—Our readers are again reminded (hut Wirth’s circus appears in Temuka to-morrow night. Geraldine will not be visited, as, on account of its size, the eircus only plays at towns situated on the railway line, and a large number of visitors from Geraldine and surrounding districts are expected to attend at Temuka. The entertainment provided is a first-class one, and the attendance will be doubtless be very large. At limaru the eiroua has just played for three nights, the tent being filled each time.

Wesleyan Conference. —At the Wesleyan Conference at Christohurh on Saturday morning it was resolved to recommend to the General Conference that lay men join with the ministers in the election of president, and secretary and (hat practically the order of services be reversed. The public services of the Conference have been well attended and were of groat interest. The Rev. Mr Rothwell was ordained on Friday evening, when the charge was giyen by the Key.
