ENGLAND AND PORTUGAL.
London, Jan. 16. The Berlin and Vienna press support the action of Lord Salisbury in connection with the dispute with Portugal. Lisbon, Jsn, 17. Twenty thousand people paraded the streets last night as a demonstration against the surrender to England on the Zambesi question. In the Chamber of Deputies Senfaor Pimental, head of the new Government, said bis Government would maintain the dignity of Portugal. Jan. 19. The Portuguese are boycotting English residents, and are cancelling contracts made with them. Three days’ ago Mr Petre. the British Consul here, threatened that a British fleet would anchor in the Tagus if the violence of the populace towards the English was not repressed. The Portuguese press thereupon urged prudence, and the excitement is now settling down.
The officials at Quillinane, a seaport of Mosambique and the centre of territory in dispute between England and Portugal, are much dissatisfied with the manifesto issued by Senhor Pimental, the Portuguese Premier,
