The Earl of Euston, whose name is before the public just now, used to be a boundary rider on the estate of Sir Thomas Elder in Seuth Australia, and was afterwards associated to Chief Justice Way. The Paris Exhibition did not pay its way, after all! Prom the final statement of receipts and expenditure it appears that the latter exceeded the former by 17,000,000 fr. The deficit was met by a subsidy of 18,000,000 from the State and 7,000,000 from the city, but these subventions cannot be regarded as legitimate revenue. The experience of Paris, therefore, may be accepted as decisive on the point whether international exhibitions can bo made to pay tbeir way. The answer is that they cannot.
