A LIVELY TIME.

A mosb extraordinary scene was witnessed at Kansas City recently, when for five hours the town was practically in possession of a herd of steers. The animals were being driven by eight cowboys from the stocks, in order to he taken across the Missouri • but when they got to the bridge they turned round, and the whole herd made for the city, the cowboys on their horses being in hot pursuit, ‘he infuriated beasts cieared the streets. Going round one block of buildings they were intercepted by four cowboys, who beaded them, and succeeded in drawing all but eight off to the river’s bank. The eight remaining animals went careering through the streets, upsetting everyone who got in their way. One of the animals was lassoed by a cowboy, and the steer, the horse, and the cowboy were seen tearing away towards the river. Neither the horse nor the steer could be got to stop, but the cowboy, on seeing this, jumped off, leaving the steer and horse to rush madly over the bank. They had a fall of 25 feet, but both reached the opposite bank, after a good swim, without being injured. In the meantime the other animals in the street had got all over the city. Several were shot dead, and one charged up a cable-way, head downwards. In its onward rush it did not raise its head, and came into collision with a cable car coming down. The impact was simply terrific, and the animal fell dead in a heap—so great, indeed, was the concussion that the end of the iron car was bent. It was not until five hours’ of the greatest excitement that the animals were either killed or else driven out of the town. No one was seriously injured, but at least a dozen persons were suffering from the untimely visit of the infuriated beasts;
