MURDER.
Bsisbane, December 29. A brutal murder was committed at Downfall Creek, a few miles from Brisbane, early this morning. Very few details are to hand, but it appears that John Joseph O’Halloran, a dairyman, Henry Wells, a butcher, and Wells’ wife were together in an hotel on the G-ympie road until closing time last night. Nothing further is known of their movements until after two o’clock this morning, when a son of the hotelkeeper heard a noise, and looking out of a window saw Wells belabouring O’Halloran with a piece of wood. On going out he found O’Halloran lying unconscious, bleeding from wounds in the head, and the injured man died shortly afterwards. Some hours later Wells was arrested in a hut about three miles from the scene of the murder. There is no certainty as to the motive for the crime, but it ia currently reported that the parties quarrelled about Wells’ wife.
