John H. Stephenson, son of the well-known auctioneer, died on Friday morning at Dunedin from inflammation of the bowels, resulting from a cold caught at the Tokomairiro races. The deceased was an ardent athlete, representing the province in the football fields on several occasions. The New Zealand Stud Company held their annual sale of thoroughbred stock on Friday at Sylvia Park, Auckland. There was a very large attendance, and the prices realised were eminently satisfactory. Fortythree yearlings were submitted, and the total amount realised from the sale was6lsß guineas. Among the principal buyers were Messrs Wilson, of Adelaide, Q-. G. Stead, Canterbury, Gollan, J. D. Ormond, and D. O’Brien. The report of Mr G. Wilson, Inspector of Mines, on the find of silver at Puhipuhi, has just been received by the Government, The exact locality of the prospectors’ reef is at the northern end of Puhipuhi State forest, in block 3, Hukernui survey district. The rock in which the reefs run is composed chiefly of soft decomposed clay slate with occasional traces of sandstone, similar to that found in the Hauraki mining district. So far as Mr Wilson saw, silver occurred in the quartz only in small quantity, excepting in the “ silver ” reef, which yielded from a specially picked sample as much as 97oza. 18dwt. 9grs. of silver, and Idwt. 15grs. of gold per ton. Mr Wilson does not think that the reef could he profitably worked, and by careful examination of the stone he was inclined to believe that the percentage of rich ore which would be much leas than 10 per cent,
