The Cromwell Company (Otago) have obtained 81ozs of retorted gold from 89 tons. Beeves, driver of the coach between Martinborough and Featherston, Wellington, received serious injuries by the overturning of the coach on Thursday, and it was found necessary to amputate at the thigh. The injured man lies in a critical condition. A man, name unknown, died on Saturday morning at Flynn’s Hotel, Ashley. He put up there on Thursday evening, and on Friday afternoon was found unconscious in the stable. Flynn did all possible for him, but he never rallied. The cause of death was ascertained to be apoplexy. At the inquest Constable Costin said from his hands he judged that the man was not a farm laborer. There was nothing to lead to identification beyond a piece of paper, on which was written “ Horsley Downs, December 17th,” and was, he supposed, an order on Mr W. White for a pair of blucherboots, the other side of the paper bearing the name “Joseph Aitken, Horsley Downs:” Deceased’s face appeared marked with smallpox, The deceased came to Ashley from the direction of Sefton. He was sft 9in or lOin in height, stout build, fair complexion, grey eyes, good features, fair moustache and side whiskers, and about a fortnight’s growth of beard. He was wearing a grey overcoat and old tweed clothes,, and a pair of old blucher boots.
