SAD CASE OF SUICIDE.
A very sad case of this nature occurred in Temuka last Wednesday evening, and created a widespread feeling of regret. Mr Abbundio Coira, better known asßertie (Join), a brother of Mr P. Coiia, t>£ the \ Waliingford Hotel, had been in ill-health for some diys previous. He had been out. harvesting, and ought some sort of an ailment, which appeared to have disturbed his mind, and rendered him unaccountable (or h's actions. He w»b closely attended, but, having bean left alone in his room for some time on the evening in question, he attempted to commit suicide by cutting his throat with a penknife. As soon as this was discovered the police and Dr Hlundon were sent for, and it was discovered thr.t still there were hopes of hie recovery. Dr Bluoden having dressed the wound, he ordered the patiunt to be taken to the hospital that night, and, a conveyance having been secured, Mr Beri and Constable Egan tock him there. When he reached Timaru he was put under a further operation by the Timaru doctors, but surgical skill proved unavailing, for he died at 3 o'clock the same morning. The deceased was well known as an inoffensive, harmless young man, aod his death cast a gloom over the town. The following is an account of the ioqnest, us published by the Timaru Evening M.iil : - Peter Coira stated the deceased was
his brother. He was employed by witness. He was always temperate in his habits and attended to his business. On the 21st he was at work during the forenoon, and at 5 o'clock he went to milk as usual. On his return he went into the bar, and said he felt bad across the loins. Witness told him to lie down. On Sunday morning deceased was still ill and Dr Blunden was called in who said he,was suffering from ferer and ague. At about 8.30 on Tuesday evening went to deceased's room and found him on the floor on his hands and kne«*s. His head was down and he was bleeding from the neck. Called for assistance, and Mr Eadford came up. IWnd a cut on his throat, and as they lifted him found a knife with open blade in his right hand. The doctor came and attended to the wound. He was then conveyed to the Timaru Hospital. Before he left he appeared to be quit© conscious, and asked Mrs Brewer to wash his hands, and told witness to blow out the candle, On Tuesday deceased said he had done something wrong and wanted to go away. William Blunden, medical practitioner stated that he visited deceased on Sunday last, and found him suffering from malarial fever and ague. It was a complaint of long standing. Saw him again on Tuesday, when he was suffering from delirium tremens, and witness treated him accordingly. Gave orders that he should be watched. Was called to hotel at 8.30 on Tuesday evening, and found he had cut his throat, and was lying on the floor in a state ot semi-collapse. Sewed it up and bandaged it, and the bleeding stopped entirely, Ordered him to the Timaru hospital. Was of opinion that the act bad been committed whilst of unsound mind.
Dr Lawson, hospital surgeon, stated deceased was brought to the hospital on Wednesday morning. There was an incised wound on the left side or! the throat, and he was in a state of delirium. Together with Dr Lovegrove took steps to save the man's life, but he expired at 3.30 o'clock. The jury, without retiring returned a verdict that deceased died from a wound in the throat inflicted by himself whilst in a state of temporary in- ' sanity,
