GERALDINE PUBLIC SCHOOL CONCERT.

The annual concert in aid ©f the prize fund of the Geraldine Public School took place in the Volunteer Hall, Geraldine, on Friday evening last. The attendance of the public was very large indeed, and it was well that the Volunteer Hall had been taken, as otherwise a great number would have been unable to obtain admission to the Oddfellows’ Hall. /The room had been decorated with evergreens, flags, etc. Mr W. P. Maslin, Chairman of the School Committee, occupied the chair. Miss Alice Fish presided at the piano. The programme consisted of two parts. The first was taken by the infants, who, under the guidance of Miss Pearson, sang one of the ever-popular action songs. In this instance the words “ We want to get some money for the Geraldine Public School” were set to the well-known tune of '! Napoleon’s Army,” and the amusing actions of the children took the house by storm. These infants also sang three other songs—namely, “ The Boat Song,” “ The Shell,” and “ The 'Coil in a manner that reflected the , greatest credit on Miss Pearson and her assistant, Miss Hawke, for the very careful training they had given the infants. The second part of the programme consisted of the performance of J. C. Gneve’s kinderspiel

«Playmates” by a number of the * elder scholars, under the guidance of *Mr J. Aitken. In this again the (children were highly successful, and called forth round after round of applause. The kinderspiel shows the adventures of Jack the Giant-killer, Dick Whittington, and Jack o’ the Bean Stalk. The manner in which the children taking the leading characters had learnt their parts reflected the utmost credit upon both them and their teachers. The following parts were taken :—Mother Goose, Miss Maggie Dunlop; Mother Goose’s Son, Master Ben White; Jack the Giant-killer, Master Willie Maslin;, Dick Whittington, Master Geo. Stonehouse; Jack o’the Bean Stalk, Master W. Morrison; Aunt Sally, Miss Edna Sherratt; Flora Macdonald, Miss Fanny Gibson; Annie Laurie, Miss Emily Maslin; Maggie Lauder, Miss Maggie Morrison; Simple Simon, Master John Morrison. A number of little boys took part as Highlanders, and made a brave display with their tartans, glengarries, and flags. A number of girls also danced the maypole dance, Altogether the appearance of th® children, with their bright and happy faces, their light dresses, and their wreaths and garlands, made a very / pretty and effective scene. The whole "Vof the long kinderspiel was got through capitally, without a hitch, the children taking up their parts and singing their songs in a manner that showed plainly the amount of time and attention that must have been expended in working up the performance. At the conclusion of the entertainment a very hearty vote of thanks was, upon the motion of Mr IShiers, seconded by Mr Sherratt, accorded to Miss Alice Fisb for presiding at the piano, to the teachers, and to the donors of the special prizes, including Messrs Moore and White. Mr Moore acknowledged the vote on behalf of Miss Fish and for himself, Mr White replying to the reference made to himself. Mr Aitken replied for the teachers, and stated that the work of getting up the concert was a labor of love. The singing had been taken as the ordinary singing lesson all through the year. The singing of the national anthem concluded the proceedings.
