ST. JOSEPH’S SCHOOL CONCERT.
The annual concert given by the children attending the above school was held last Monday evening in the Tolunteer Hall, Temuka. The hall was crowded to excess, many having to stand. In our opioion the sisters of St. Joseph would do well to get the big hall next year, as certainly the present ball is far too small for the number of people that attend yearly at their concerts. The programme was a long and varied one, and it was gone through faithfully, the only fault being that it was too long, and that in some of (he dialogues the children did not speak loud enough to be heard at the back. This could be remedied by teaching the children to speak louder and throw more life into their actions. The performance was otherwise exceedingly creditable, and the children did infinite credit to their teachers. The following is the programme

It would be impossible to criticise individually every one who took part in this programme, and consequently we : must content ourselves with a few general remarks. We may say, however; that the singing was exceptionally good. Miss Con nolly was in excellent voice and eang splendidly. Some of the smaller children deserve great praise for the way they acquitted themselves, and amongst them we may mention Miss Taylor and Master F. Scannell, who spoke and acted wel'. The prologue rendered by Miaeea E. Dalton and L. Archer was also creditably spoken, and Matter Polaachtk’a singing was a feature of the performance. Master H. Louis was exceedingly good, as usual, and Miss Warning's recitation was splendidly rendered. Master E. Lavery sang well and spoke his parts bo'd’y and vigorously, The singing and acting in the ‘ Red Riding Hood ’ cantata was exceptionally good, and was the meat interesting item of the programme. The ‘Precious Pickle ’ drama was also well done, in which two little girls, Miss Davis as Juno, (a colored help), and Miss Williams as Sissy Gabble were excellent, The song, 1 Don’t leave your Mother,’ by Masters M. Connolly, J. Scannell, and If, Polaschsk was capitally sung. Master H. Louis 1 created a furort by singing ‘Mr Mulcahey, • Ksquire,’ and as an encore gave “ The Old i Ann Chair.’ Miss Connolly was also encored for both her songs. A great deal , of the success of the entertainment was ’ duo to the excellent playing of Miss Quinn who accompanied the sisging. 1 Sho played softly and sweetly, and was careful not to drown the singing in the mu*ic. The Misses Wateing ; played a duet, and the Misses Quinn a trio, on the piano in a manner (hat elicited great applause. These are pupils of Miss Yau Neck, and they did infinite credit to her teaching. The' chief feature of the - entertainment was the orderly and , disciplined manner in which the children oame on and went off the stage, and the • graceful way in which they deported tbem- ■ selves throughout. There was not one 5 hitch from beginning to end, and evoryr thing werked with clocklike precision. 5 The dresses, too, were handsome, and . qoile appropriate to the various parts, I and in fact it would be difficult to find a better dressed, a better behaved, or a fleer lot of children than took part in the 1 entertainment. The Sisters of S f . Joseph • have every reason to be proud of them, i as taken all round Ihey bore testimony to b the excellence of the training they have j received from their self-sacrificing and > devoted teachers.
