The Wellington Woollen Company has paid a dividend of 8 per cent. News has been received that 61b tins of mutton preserved at a factory at Blenheim realised in London 5Jd per lb. David Burt, an elderly man, was found drowned in a gravel pit at Rangiora on Saturday morning. It is supposed he had an epileptic fit. A Baby Show is to be held at Christchurch on the 23rd, 24th, and 25th December, and to date over 100 entries have been received. The recent band contest at Christchurch resulted in deficit of £l3O.
A young man named John Polseu, employed as a lumper, was drowned in the harbor at Auckland on Friday by the capsizing of an open boat. In the Supreme Court, Napier, on Friday Mary Kyle, for concealment of birth, received two months’ hard labor. A sixteen-roomed house at Avondale, Auckland, occupied by Capt. Elliott, was burned on Friday morning. The building was insured for £SOO in the Northern Insurance Office, and the furniture is said to be covered by a policy in the Sun Office. Stephenson has made a final deposit of £SO for the match with Hearn for the sculling championship. Cutler’s Kailway Hotel at Eketahuna was burnt down on Wednesday night. Insurances: Colonial £4OO, Standard £BOO.
Captain Russell paid a visit to the Lincoln School of Agriculture on Thursday, and expressed himself as highly pleased with what he saw, Mr Dillon has addressed a meeting on Home Rule at Invercargill and it is expected that £2OO will be raised for the Evicted Tenants Fund. Mr Feldwick, M.H.R., occupied the chair at the meeting.
