In rep'y to Lord Salisbury’s despatol protesting against the Portuguese en croachment in Zambesi and refusing tc recognise the assumption of control o the country to the north of the moult of the Zambesi by Portugal, the Por'uguese Government declare that they have no desire to encroach on established rights of other coun'ries but they assert that the country claimed was discovered and explored by Port ugu-se a long time since. Lord Salisbury ridicules the idea pro* mulgated by Lord Rosebery in favor of British Imperial federation on the basis of American federation.
Dec. 2. A rumor has reached here to the effect that the Mahdi is dead. It is stated that Monsignor Safcalli reporting to His Holiness the Pope on the present state of Ireland, denies the statement that the Government land purchase scheme involves an expenditure of tea millions of money.
i Dec. 3, 1 A letter received by Emin Bey from the Mahdist general when the latter was . besieging Wadelai, has been published. It calls on Emin to surrender and embrace the Mahdist religion, promising him high honors and protection, ihe R.M.S. Rirautaka left Plymouth yesterday for New Zealand. H.M.S. Turquoise, on the Bast Indian station, has been ordered to proceed to Bagamayo, to convey Stanley to Zanzibar. Slavin is in splendid condition for his approaching fight with Jem Smith, and is confidant of winning. Mr Howard Vincent, M.P., and other members of the organisation are protesting that the Federation Leagne is in danger of being converted into a mere conference. The Earl of Carnarvon, the promoter of the league, Sir Charles Tapper, Sir Daniel Cooper, Mr Kusden, and a majority of the members, support the views of Lord Loseberry, who con'ends that the league will exist with much benefit to, the Empire for many years if the proposal to hold periodical conferences is conceded. Referring to the anti-slayery conference now sitting at Brussels, he trusted that their discussions would lead to reducing the slive trade. Constantinople, Dec. 3. Mouses Bey has been acquitted of the charge of having committed outrages on the Armenians. St. Petersburg, Dec. 2. There is an epidemic of influenza throughout the country, which is reported as a forerunner of an outbreak of cholera. Bombay, Dec. I. A native trooper of the Bombay lancers stationed at Desa ran amuck and killed Colonel Heyland ; be also fatally wounded two native officers. Cairo, Dec, 1. Trade with the Soudan, excepting in arms and grain has been re-opened. Zanzibar, Dec. 1. Major Wiseman has received letters from Stanley stating that the supplies forwarded to him have been received, and intimating that in ail probability be will reach Bagamayo on Wednesday next, New York, Dec. 3. A tremendous storm has been experienced at Grafton, on the Clarence river, New South Wales. A tornado struck the western side of the town, and immense damage was done to the buildings, The crops in the district were cut down, houses were unroofed, and several persona were reported injured by falling debris, Sir Henry Psrkes has agreed to the suggestion of Mr Gillies, Premier ot Victoria, that representatives of New South Wales should attend the Federal Council to discuss the question of Federation.
The present contractor has abandonrd the attempt to raise the steamer Centennial. Dec. 3. j Thomas, the defaulting teller of the . Bank of New Zealand, was charged be- , fore the coart to.day with embezzling f the funds of the bank. He pleaded i guilty, electing to bo dealt with sum- , marily, and counsel for the bank intimated that prisoner had made the fullest reparation in bis power. He was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, Melbourne, Dec. 2. Arrived—Mararoa, from the Bluff. The Federal Council will meet at Hobart in January. There is, however, very little business for consideration. Dec, 3. Sailed— the Bluff, The Hon. A, Deakfn, Chief, Secretary, passenger for Dunedin, where he will rppresent the Government at the New Zealand Exhibition, The Government have decided to offer a bonus on butter exported from Victoria to England. The amount of the bonus reaches from Id to 3d per lb, regulated by the price at which the article is sold in the Home market. Brisbane, Dec, 2. The steamer Koonooworra came into collision with the steamer RaneUgh, off Maryborough, last night. The latter vessel received considerable damage, a great gap being cat in her side, but her watertight compartments prevented her from sinking. One of the crew was pinned in bis bunk as-he lay asleep, and was terribly burned by the bursting of a kerosene lamp. The Koonoowarra was not seriously damaged.
