GERALDINE TOWN BOARD.

The monthly meeting of this board was held on Tuesday evening last. Present—Messrs W. S. Maslin (chairman), J. Mundell, J. Williams, A, White, A. Sherratt, R. Taylor, and K Dunlop. CORRESPONDENCE. Outward correspondence was read and approved of. Inward was read and dealt with as follows Prom Messrs W. Guthrie & Oo„ Invercargill, enclosing report of expert engaged by them to inspect the Gore fire engine and hose reel.—The report was of a highly satisfactory nature, and a cheque was drawn for the purchase money, with a request for the appliances to be sent at once. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Messrs Guthrie & Co. for the trouble they had taken in the matter, and the expert’s fee ®f £3 3s was also passed. Mr R. Morrison wrote complaining that the board had given Mr Butcher permission to take water from the race, and Mr Butcher was injuring his fence by getting through to take the water,—lt was pointed out that Mr Butcher had been told that he could have water from the race, but must not injure anyone’s property in getting

it- It was also pointed out that he could get the water from the race farther along without going through the fence at all. It was decided to inform Mr M orrison that no permission to get through bis fences had been given. He had the remedy in

iris own hands, and muse aeai witn mr Butcher accordingly. From Messrs Meason & Marchant re water race. —Bead. —In accordance with the instructions given at the previous meeting the clerk had prepared a detailed account of the cost of the water race. The actual amount paid to date was shown to be £479 3s , 6d, with an outstanding liability of about £ls. From Messrs Woollcombe & Clulee, Timaru, as agents for the Imperial Fire Insurance Company, asking what steps had been taken towards fire prevention.—The clerk stated that he had supplied the requisite information. From one or two ratepayers re arrears of rates, and also re present rates.—The clerk was instructed to inform them that unless the arrears were paid within seven days they would be sued for without further notice. He was also instructed to hand the unpaid list over to the board’s solicitors with instructions to take legal steps for the recovery of those outstanding at the end of seven days.—ln reply to a question the clerk stated that the rates due on Hov. 26th were coming in very slowly. —lt was decided to notify by advertisement that all rates outstanding after Dec. 14th would be sued for, and to communicate with the board’s solicitor to that effect. From Mr J. Pperrey, Property Tax Commissioner, asking the board to forward a copy of the resolution adopting the Bating Act ef 1882 for insertion in the Gazette. —Copy to be sent. The ranger’s report for the month was read. EIRE BRIGADE. A deputation from the fire brigade, consisting of Messrs Walton, Baker, Winefield, and T. Sherratt, waited on the board with a list of requisites for the engine, and also enquired what subsidy the board would allow the brigade per annum. They further enquired what class of uniforms the board were prepared to supply. Ihe deputation having stated their wants withdrew, and the board then considered the request. It was finally decided to grant a subsidy of £ls per annum, to obtain the necessaries required,also a uniform, the latter not to exceed £2 10s per man; all the s rticles to be the property of the board, and an agreement to that effect to be drawn up and signed. The works committee l were authorised to confer with a committee from the brigade to make the necessary arrangements and to call for tenders for the supply of the articles required. overseer's report. The overseer’s report was read and considered. It was decided to write to Messrs Woollcombe & Clube re the dangerous state of the large gorse fence on Mrs S. Taylor’s property. A complaint was received re the lamps not being lit one or two dark nights.—lt was decided to call the attention of the lamplighter to the fact. The works committee were authorised to carry the water down the west side of the street, provided it could be done at a small cost. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £72 17s 6d, including fire engine and inspection fee, were passed for payment. The pay-sheet amounting to more than the amount to credit on current account the chairnian was authorised to make arrangements with the bank for a temporary overdraft. The meeting then terminated.
