Another Disappointment.—The theatrical troupe who were advertised to appear last evening in the Temuka' Volunteer Hall did not come. There was consequently some disappointment. . Good Templars’ Lodge, Geraldine.— It will be seen that the popular annual picnic of this lodge will be held as usual on New Year’s Day. This year it takes place in the small bush park, Geraldine. Host-Proof Wheat;—The Minister of Lands has received a communication from Mr W. S. Liszel t, of Spulh Australia, calling his attention to a ruat-pyo'pf wheat, which has been under test in South Australia for some time, and which went, unscathed through this year, one of the worst ever known for rust. Concert at WooDBPEy,—An advertisement elsewhere notifies that a concert in aid of the prize fund of the Woodbury school will be given in the schoolhoase on the 12th mst. by 7 the - Primitive Methodist choir, of' Geraldine. ;The success of this choir in similar entertainments at Geraldine and elsewhere is a guarantee that the concert will be an enjoyable one. 1 Timuka Eifles.—A Government parade of thp Temuka Rifles took place last night. Present —30 rank and file, Lieut. Findlay commanding. To-day a match will be fired at the range between squads of the local corps and Timaru Navals. The following team will represent Temuka—Lieut. Findlay, Sergeant vHqbbs, Corporal Whitehead, and Privates- Waft; Philips; Scott, Eadburnd, B. Lavery, H. Lavery, -J. Sim, and Greaves (emergency). The men ' are requested to be at the range at half-past one sharp. The Tiptiaru team will arrive by the mid-day train. The conditions of the-match are 7 shots each at ranges 200,300, and 400 yards, Wimbledon targets and scoring. Home Rule. —We beg to remind our readers that Sir Thomas- Grattan Esmonds will address a meeting in the Volunteer Drillshed, Temuka, this evening. The chair will be taken at S o’clock by Mr F, F. Gray, Chairman of the Temuka Town Board, and after Sir Thomas Esmonde’s address speeches will be delivered by the best speakers in South Canterbury. We are requested to slate that it weuld bo desirable that collectors should give an account of the amount they have collected in the afternoon to either the secretary or the treasurer. They need not pay in the money ; all they need do is to lot the committse know how much they have collected, so that the total amount can be announced ut the meeting.
Important Land the Ist of May next year about a quarter of a million acres,of crown lands will be opened for sale in the Canterbury district. Possession cannot be taken, by The successful , buyers until May, -but the Minister of Lands intends to dispose of 110,000 acres in February, March,' and April. The land will be opened as follows.:—ln February ; A bout 7,000 acres on the plains south of .the Rakaia; 6,000 acres on the plains south of tha Rangitata ; 17,000 acres on the hill slopes "near Albury and Fairlie Greek ; total, ; 30,000 acres. In March : 20,000 acres on the pla’ns between Ashburton and Hinds, and 15,000 on the hill s'opea ; total, 35,000, In. April; 25,000 acres on the plains between Hinds and Rangitata ; 2,D,00Q acres on the hill slopes near Geraldine; 1;000 acres on the hip slopes at Station Peak ; total, 45,000. Grand total, 110,000. The balance will be disposed of very soon afterwards.
6.0. Charitable Aid Board. The annual statutory meeting of this board was called for yesterday morning, only two members have been elected, namely, Mr 0. M. Boss, representing the Tnmru Rorough Council, and Dr 11. B. Hogg, representing the Mackenzie County. The bod'es who have failed to elect representatives are; Geraldine County, four ; Wuimate County Council and Waunate Borough . Council, one each. Mr Ross (who holds office as chairman until his successor is elected), said thot the seciGlnry had telegraphed to the Minister on the subject, and the following rep'y hid been received ; “ Members must recommend the names of persona who are Stand willing to act to the Government, who will appoint.” It was decided that tlw local bodies interested, should make the rfcommendgtious asked for. Bbeb Duty.—The beer duty paid last month was £5055 ss. ]?or the corresponding month last year the amount was £4105 5s 44. Gebaldinb Rifles. —The Geraldine Rifles parade for volley and independent firing at 3 o’clock this afternoon. A special inspection parade takes place at half-past seven in the evening, ABBIVAL OB THE TONQABIBO. The R.M.S. 'longariro arrived at Wellington from London, via the Cape and Hobart,at 4 o’clock on Monday afternoon. She left Plymouth on the 19th October, Customs Revenue.—During the month ot November £121,977 Is 91 was received throughout the colony. For October the amount was £117,667 15s 8.1. At Ttmaru £1368 lls 6d was collected. COSOBBT AND DaNOB AT WAITOHI FLAT.— To-morrow evening a concert and dance in aid of khe prize fund takes place in the Waitohi Flat School. The committee have made every effort to ensure the enjoyment ef visitors. Ouushbd Fbed fob Hobbes.—A reference to Messrs W. A. Sherratt and Oo.’s advertisement in another column will show that that fi*m have added to the plant at their yards a oornernsher driven by steam, and they are now prepared to crush every description of grain for farmers and others. R.M. Coubt, Gebaldinb.—At this court, yesterday, before Captain 0. A. Wray, R.M., and H. W. Moore, J.P., judgment by default for plaint ff for the amount claimed and cost* was given in the case T. Somerville v. Alexander Ritchie —el lira £2 4s for firewood supplied. Mr F. Wilson Smith appeared for plaintiff. FpUND. Dead.—A*'man named William Jones was picked up hear Jordan, Marlborough, on Friday, having evidently been thrown from a horse. Ha was taken to an accommodation house, and died in a few hours from peritonitis. ’He wa‘s emaciated in appearance, and had ; been drinking heavily. It is believed he was at one time a hotelkeeper in Tiraaru. Cue Volunxeebs. —lt is stated that Major Newell, the present Adjutant of the Canterbury District, is-’-CdPW removed to Wellington, where'.he will act us chief clerk in the Defence Office, and hold the position of Acting Adjutant of the Wellington District. Major Newall is to be succeeded as Adjutant of the Cant irbury District by Major Webb, of Nelson, and tb.e Nelson and Westland volunteers are to be left without an adjutant. ITmabu School.—At the last meeting of the Ttmaru School Comnrttee the head master, Mr J. Wood, applied for six months’ leave of absence (dating frem the termination ot the Christmas holidays on) account of illhealth, and forwarded certificates from Drs Reid and Hayoa in suppoit of his application. Ho also recommended that during his absence Mr Wake, the second master, should fill his place. Members expressed their sympathy with Mr Wood, and it was decided to forward the application to the Board of Education. Cantkebuet’s Repbesbntatives. SUSPICIOUS —A somewhat suggestive discovery has just been made by the police at Rcefton. A young man named Jas, Allen, long employed on this field as a battery hand, was arrested at Qreymouth yesterday morning on suspicion of being the unlawful possessor of a considerable quantity of retorted gold.
The police applied to the bank in Q-reymouth and obtained 80ozs of retorted gold. The gold was just on the point of haing melted by the bsak for Allen, who with a man named August was en route to the Dunedin exhibition. Allen was employed at the Sir Francis Drake battery, the poorness of the returns from which have tatber puzzled the dirertors for some time past. Allen is to be brought to Roeftou and charged. Pbimtiive Methodist Church.— The quarterly meeting of the Geraldine circuit of the above church was held at Ternuka on Monday last, there being a good attendance of officials. The circuit was found to be in a very fl mriahing condition, both financially and spiritually, there having been a number of converts recently, and the prospects tor the future are hopeful and bright. Delegates were appointed to represent the station at the District meeting, and the Rev. G. Olement was unanimously invited to stay another year, which dqvitation was accepted. In the evening, asocial tea having been provided, a large number partook of “ the cup wh'ch cheers but does not intoxicate,” the tables being presided over by Mesdnmes Bryan, Freddy, Pruttley,,. and Woodley, After justice ■ had been done, .to the good things provided, a publio meeting was held,,when the church was held. After singing and prnye", the Itev. G. Olement took the chair, and in his opening remarks congratulated the circuit upon the prosperous state of the aoci-ties. i :At Tomuku £9 7s 6,d had been laised for circirt and missionary purposes, oyer £7 Tor Sunday Schoo', and £5 promised towards a new harmonium during tiie ; quarter, while at Geraldine they had raised over £2B for circuit purposes, besides .-clearing (heir church from debt. After paying all the levies and other expenses they found there was a balance in hand. Hesitations were given by (he Misses A, Whittaker (T'nmu), Eakott (Geraldine), M. Motgon, Prallloy, and Smith ; solos by Mr C. Robinson and Miss Andrews ; duets by Mrs Burton Miss Brogdeo, and Misses South and Williams ; and addresses by Messrs Hammond, Epps, Bryan, and A.Sherratt. An instrumental duet was also given by Messrs D. Bryan and Duncan. In the unavoidable absence of Mrs J. B. Epps, through indisposition, Miss Andrews, of Geraldine, kindly presided at din organ, which had been kindly len' by Mr Dune in. The Brass B ind, under the condnctorship of Mr D. Bryan, played several selections whilo the tables were being cleared. Mr J. M. Sutherland pro
posed, and Mr L. Newport seconded, a hearty vote of thanks to (he ladies who had provided the excellent ton, and the meeting closed with the Benediction.
