ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, Nov. 24. Leave has been granted (o Lord Easton to prosecute Mr Park, proprietor of the North London Press, for associating him with the alleged scandal at a West End club. Mr Park does not flinch from the position he has taken up, and asserts that Mr Munro, Commissioner of Police, threatened to resign unless allowed by the Cabinet to prosecute the offenders. Id the meantime, however, Mr Park says, Lord Arthur Somerset and Holland, the keeper of the house, bolted.
The dispute between the lightermen and their employers has been settled. The annual confirmation of the degrees at the University of Glasgow to-day resalted in a riot. It appears that the authorities, warned by the conduct of students in previous years, had decided to exclude undergraduates from the cere, mony, This action was strongly resented by the students, who smashed in the doors, bustled the professors, and drenched them with water. Munster, Nov. 26. By the subsidence of a mine at Recklinghausen, a town 30 miles sonth-west of here, 250 miners have been entombed alive. Food is sent down by means of air pipes, and it is expected that all of them will be rescued. Paris, Not. 24. The Chamber of Deputies, by a majority of seven, reversed the decision in favor of the abolition of the monopoly which exists in tbs manufacture of watches. Berlin, Nov, 24. In the Reichstag yesterday Count Herbert Bisraark denied that there was any truth in the report that the Emperor William was led by General Count de Walderaee, one of bis aides-de-camp. He also stated that it was not likely that the Government would establish a colonial office, Vienna, Nov. 24. The Austrian Press, reasoning from the Czar’s recent utterances, speaks hopefully of the maintenance of peace. Eighty Hungarian women are being tried on a charge of poisoning their husbands, Constantinople, Nov. 24. The efforts of the Russian Armenians at Tiflis have at last been successful, and the people of Erzerpum, the principal fortress on the Russian frontier, have decided that they will become incorporated with Russia, Nov. 26. The Sultan has ordered strict enquiry to be made in connection with the outrages committed on Armenian residents by the Kurds under Monssa Bey, Rome, Nov. 24. His Holiness the Pope is desirous of arbitrating in Irish affairs. Berne, Nov, 24. The Republic of Switzerland has recognised the new Brazilian Republic. Rio be Janeiro, Nov. 24.
It is possible that the German settlers in Brazil will declare their independence. Zanzibar, Noy. 25.
Information has been received that Stanley has determined the area of some of the lakes in the territory through which he has passed. He found that Lake Albert Nyanza extends to within 158 miles to Lake Tanganyika; while Lake Victoria Nyanza is 270 miles in length, and has a superficial area of 27,000 square miles. Ottawa, Not. 24.
The Montreal Herald urges that Canada should imitate the action of Brazil and become a republic, and points out that even the baby community of Australia is taking steps to establish itself as an independent nation. San Francisco, Nov. 24.
Sullivan is willing to fight Peter Jackson to a finish, and 14,000 dollars additional have been subscribed for the match by the San Jose Club. ♦ AUSTRALIAN CABLE. Melbourne, Nov. 25. The Admiralty steamer Eperia, which has been on a sounding; cruise in the South Sea Islands, has arrived from Tonga, It is the intention of the Admiralty to have her refitted, and she will resume the survey in about two months. She reports that between. Fiji and the Navigator Islands the deepest sounding ever reached by n British vef sel was oh. tained. In that locality a depth of 4530 fathoms was recorded. A terrific storm has been raging at (he township of South, on the Darbay River, 573 miles north-west of Sydney. Several bouses were unroofed, and the amount of damage occasioned in the town was considerable. While the storm was at its height, lump of ice 'quite the size of cricket balls fell, killing many animals which were unable to obtain shelter.; Soiled—Wakatipu, for Wellington.
