MELBOURNE.

The following extract from a letter recieved from a New Zealander, lately started work in Melbourne, may interest some of our readers:— “ There is no doubt about Melbourne being a marvellous place, and if the New Zealand Q-overnment would take a lesson from them Auckland would not be in its present state. The railways are a marvel, they make people travel. For instance; I travel to my work about miles each way on two distinct lines and only pay seven shillings per mouth. I can use the ticket as often as I think proper. Then again as to the buildings. The allotments run a great way skywards. There is one now going up that ie at its eighth storey, and has four more to go defore the slates go on. Blank’s Office is in Queen street and I had to go up in the lift to the sixth storey. The lifts are something grand, and nicely f urnisned. There are generally two—while one is going up, the other is going down, incessantly. Workshops here are on a grand scale. Where I work there is about 600 hands employed, and without a doubt there is nothing like protection to make a country go ahead if you have only an honest progressive Government to conduct the affairs of the country. Fish is a luxury that we cannot afford: Schnappers are worth here about 4s or 5s each and a lobster that you could almost put in your waistcoat pocket is worth Is 6d. Oysters run about each and come from New Zealand.
