The standing commission of the Anglican Church at Auckland met on Thursday to consider the question as to the election of Bishop Hadfield as Primate. Bishop Oowie, Sir Frederick Whitaker, and Mr C. Hesketh were present. The meeting adjourned until Monday, no decision bning arrived at. The firm of B. Tooks and Co., auctioneers, Auckland, established since 1865,, have filed a petition of insolvency. The liabilities aro estimated at £13,00®, but the assets of the business and the private estate will, if realised, yield more than this.
Captain Somerville, chairman of the Hew Zealand Kifle Association, has received a definite refusal from the Minister of. Defence to his application for perImilßioß for the loan of Martini rifles, as purchasers are taking them off the hands of the Government.
On Menday a man named Stephen Spalding, about whose case there was considerable discussion during last session of Parliament, esciped from Porirua (Wellington) Lunatic Asylum, where he has been confined for four months. His capture has not yet been effected. He is supposed to be making in the direction of Auckland, where he resided previous to his committal.
The Wellington branch of the Tailors' Trade Society have struck an immediate levy of 2i 6d per member and a further levy ef la per week in aid of the Kaiapoi strikers.
At Cbristchurch on Wednesday four cases of breach of the Licensing Act by selling during prohibited hours were heard. One was dismissed, and fines of £5, £3, and £2, were inflicted in the others, and the licenses were endorsed. One charge arose out of the recent stabbing case.
