THE COUNTY COUNCIL.
T© THB EDITOR. Sib, —The doings of the G-eraldme County Council during the past year have been characterised by a want of knowledge of public affairß unequalled by any other public body in New| Zealand. They rushed headlong into the law courts against Mr Silcock to try and avoid paying their just debts, and now they are asking the ratepayers of Bangitata to pay for their Quixotic adventure. Evidently the council has gained no wisdom from the experience they have had. They seem detormined to continue on their mismanagement to the bitter end, and involve the ratepayers of Waihi in another lawsuit. By the request ef a number of farmers the councillors at their October decided not to run their races into the Waihi creek, yet at their next meeting we find them doing exactly what they said they would not de. Such monstrous inconsistency is a disgrace to any public body, either individually or collectively. Mr Postlethwaite has asked them to run the races into the Waihi, and they bent their knees and worshipped. Mr Poatlethwaite, as ex-chairman of the G-eraldine Road Board, knows fall well that we have too much waterjalready, and that the races will undoubtedly damage our property. At the last meeting of the council Mr Moore is reported to have said that it was ridiculous to expect them to consult the ratepayers before going to law. Prom Mr Moore's point ef view perhaps it is, but I think the majority of the ratepayers think differently. There is not the shadow of a doubt but that there . are scores of men sitting in our council chambers throughout the province whose only qualification for being there is their eross ignorance of public affairs. I Beg to apologise for trespassing on your space soiar.—-I am, &«., J. D. Jones,
