TEMUKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The monthly meeting of the Temuka School Committee was held last Tuesday evening. Present—Messrs K. F. Gray (chairman), E. Brown, A. E. Allan, W. Gr. Rutland, and J, Cooper. ENTEBTAINMENT. The secretary reported that a party of ladies and gentlemen from Timaru had kindly eonseated to give an enter-
tainment in aid of the funds of the school. "Members expressed their appreciation, and the secretary was instructed t» write suggesting a day in the first week in December for the entertainment—Tuesday for preference. COBEESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows: From the Board of Education, enclosing £ll 7s 6d, ineidentals. From the same, stating that Mr
McNaught would fill Mr Cross's place during the latter'a absence. From Mr Wagstaff, stationer* Timaru, stating that he had received a large supply of books suitable for prizes, etc., and quoting exceptionally favorable terjas. From Mr H, Cross, Sumner, requesting an extension of his leave of absence on account of continued illhealth. His medical advisers advised him to take a longer rest. —Members expressed their regret, and decided to forward the letter to the Board of Education. From the Board of Education,' stating that the examination of the school would commence on Tuesday next. HBAB MASTER'S BEPOBT. The head master's report was read j as follows: — i Sir,—l have the honor to submit the following report for the month of October : Boys. Girls. Total. Average weekly roll 191 172.8 363.8 Average attendance 150 139.4 239.4 Highest attendance 161 151 312 There will be required for examination purposes:—6 boxes nibs, 1 grass penholders, 1 dozen boxes slate pencils, 1 ream foolscap, £ ream blotting paper. I snclose cheque for £4 10s, be«ng amount of stationery fees received up to
date. I have the hoaor, etc., W. Bkyaes. Members expressed their satisfaction at the increased attendance, and the secretary was instructed to procure the requisites mentioned. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £4< 15s wero passed for payment. visitor's eepoet. Mr Cooper, the visitor, reported visiting the school and finding everything in good order, with the exception of the lavatories, where the the pipes were leaking, and the floors were all wet. Mr Bryars also pointed out that some of the holes in the desks for the ink wells wanted deepening. Hardly a day passed but several ink welle were upset. ' It was decided to have the pipes (j attended to at onee; the wells to be seen to during the holidays. \ Mr Eutland spoke of the flimsy , character of the pipes used in the | lavatory, and the inferior character of t
the whole of the work put into the school building. Mr Brown alse spoke of the unsuitability of the pipes. Mrßutlaad was appointed visitor for the month. HOLIDAYS. Some disscussion took place regardthe Christmas holidays, and it was decided that they should commence on the 13th December and last for five weeks. PEIZBB. The secretary reported that Mr B. "W. G-urr had promised £1 for twe special prizes, and in reply to the Secretary, Mr Allan said he belieTid the Caledonian Society would again give a donation of tl for prizes. The Secretary was instructed to communicate with the Society. It was decided to ret; ueat Mr Bryara to select the prizes, and to allocate £8 for the purpose. On the motion of Mr Rutland, it was decided to invite Mrs Miles, Mrs Ashwell, and Mrs Allan to inspect and judge the needlework. . The meeting then terminated.
