AUCTIONEERS' REPORT. TIMARU. Messrs Grade, Maclean and Co. report for the past fortnight ending Saturday, as follows,:— Horses—Our Saturday sales have been fairly good, and prices well maintained. On Thursday, 31st ult., we held our annual show sale, when we offered over 70 horses. Draughts were in demand and sold at up to £3O. To-day we cleared the most part of our entry, and quote medium to good draughts at from £l6 10s to £80; inferior, £8 to £l4. . Hacks and light harness horses—medium, £8 to £l4; light, £4 to £6. Sheep The demand for young stores, both shorn and in the. wool, continues brisk, and all lots to hand at the several yards have -realised prices agreeable to the' sellers. , Butchers’ sheep are also in better demand, and we have several inquiries for freezers. At Pleasant Point we sold on the 4th inst. 219 4-tooth crossbred wethers (shorn) at 10s 4d, 209 hoggets (shorn) at 7s Bd, 38 fat ewes at 10s 3d, 36 do do at 12s 7d, 24 do do at lls sd. At Wasbdyke yards, 56 fat ewes at 13s lOd, 125 merino wethers (shorn) at 7s 4d, 66 crossbred ewes with lamb at 13s 9d, 290 hoggets at 12s lOd, and privately 302 crossbred, ewes and wethers, and at the show yards, on account of A. M. Clark, Esq., 1 pen of prize crossbred wethers in the wool at 18s, 1 pen do shorn (Ist prize) at 12s. Cattle —At Pleasant Point there was the largest entry of stores we have ever seen there (about 300 head). W© sold 104 head for various owners, at—for yearlings, 17s to 245; Hto 2-year-olds, 30s to 50s; 2| to 3-year-olds, 57s 6d to 70s; dry cows, 20s to 655. At Washdyke yards the demand for stores was slightly easier this week, and but little business doing in beef. We sold yearlings at 20s to 22s 6d, steers at £3 18s 6d. At the show yards we sold on account of A. M. Clark, Esq., 14 head . .prize bullocks and heifers at £ll 5s per head.
Pigs—Only a small entry at the 'Point sale. We sold slips at 10s to 15s.
Skins—Earmers should send their woolly skins forward at once, so as to obtain good values, before fellmongers get fully employed scouring. We have sold privately and at auction over 2000 skins at very full rates; and quote beat crossbreds at from 6s to 7s 3d; ! second, 4s to 5s 6d; merinos, 4s to 6s Sd, Hides—Prices still continue ‘ very low. We sold 65 at former quotations. \ Eat—All lots to hand of rough fat have been disposed of at from 12s to 14s per cwt.
ENGLISH MARKETS, f London, Nov. 7. * The trade returns for the last ten months show that the exports have been: nearly ten millions and imports thirty-four millions in excess of last, year. New Zealand mutton, s|d; Sydney mutton, sd; New Zealand beef, hind-, quarters, 3fd. Nov. 8. i The London Chamber of Commerce, is trying to secure the permanent importation of wool without reference to the trade mark. New Zealand 4 per cent, inscribed stock, 106 f, with active market. At the wool sales prices are firmer. ; Australian wheat, ex warehouse, 39s 3d; New Zealand long berried, ex store, 37s 6d, with market quiet. Sugar, German beet, lls 6d; Java cane, 14s. Scotch pig iron, f.o.b. in the Clyde, 69s 3d,
A man named William Williams was killed on the Q-orge Eailway works, Wellington, on Thursday by a large rock falling on him while tunnelling. His spine was broken and death was almost instantaneous. At Danevirke on Friday W. F. Knight, J.P., sheepfarmer, and Eobertaon, his shepherd, were committed for trial, the latter for shooting horses belonging to natives on Knight’s run, and the former for being an accessory before th e fact by instructing Eobertaon to shoot the horses. Bail was allowed in £SO, and two sureties of £IOO each.
