The Wellington Magistrate dismissed a charge of hawking without a lioense preferred against a loo&l butoher, on the ground that the by-law is defective at to definition of a hawkerj and that one particular instance of sale was not enough to sustain a charge of hawking. A Rival of N.Z. Flax.—The AgentGeneral has forwarded a letter and gpecimen of a, new species of sisal which is especially grown in the sterile soil of the Bahamas, where the Governor of the colony is doing all he can to foßter its cultivation. Sir J?. D. Bell fears it will develope into a formidable enemy of Now Zealand flax, aB the cost of the dressed fibre hardly amounts to £lO per ton. The specimen forwarded, however, which will be sent to Dunedin, is very rough indeed, fit apparently for coarse matting and cordage only. The noted quality of the Coffee made in the Oa&Ss o£ Turkey, France, and Amerioa is chiefly due to the fact that only Fresh Boasted Coffee is used; bo that none of the volatile oil and other essentials are lost.
