Rumors were afloat last week, thatj the clerk of the Wanganui Borough I Council and of the Manga where Road Board. has deen discovered to ho deficient in the moneys of both these, bodies. The Government 1 Auditor, 'Mti O’Hara Smith, reported the matter at; once to the Audit Department, hhd also to the chairman of the boards. The chairman of both bodies interviewed the clerk, A. Kilmer, and on his pleading for< time agreed to allow him till Monday morning to pay up the deficiency. ' The County Council met on Monday, when it was at bnce known that Kilmer was non est. All kinds, of rumors are afloat. The police * got a telegram from New Plymouth stating that the missing man had ridden, to the town and gone on board the boat for Auckland, in order, it was supposed, to catch the San Prancisco mail steamer. Other rumors stated that Kilmer had been seen in town as late as Sunday, but as the boat left New Plymouth on Sunday afternoon this was hot, in view, of the previous rumour, believed. It was, generally believed that he had got away by the Auckland boat, but the police did not believe it possible. However, the County Council laid an information against him, believing it possible that he had .not got away. Tuesday evening a settler arrived in town from the Mingamadu, and reported that he had seen and spoken to Kilmer that morning, who had told him that fle was going to Collect certain overdue rates. ‘ The police are working,bn the clue.
