Mr Davitt finished bis speech before the Parnell Commission amidst applause, which was not suppressed. At its conclusion the president, Sir James Hannon, complimented him, and said that the court was obliged to him for his assistance.
Sir Henry James, one of the counsel for the Times, asserted that the Times had been a consistent and able friend of Ireland, to which Mr Davitt ejaculated “Amen,”

Sir Henry James, in the course of bis speech before the Commission, said that Irish agitation practically aimed at the separation of Ireland from England. He asserted that the Land League had a Fenian origin.
