Social at Qbabi.— A social gathering in aid of the prize fund will be held in ths South Orari school to-morrow evening. Social* are just now a most popular form of amusement, and we expect the attendance at the South Orari schoolroom to-morrow evening will be very large. Hr J. Figoni will supply the music. Sucobbstul. —The balance-sheet ef the Kauri Timber Company shows a net profit for the year of £63,597. It is proposed to pay a diyidend at the rate of 6 per cent per annum, and plaae £IO,OOO to the Dentention and Sinking Fund, £2500 to reserve, and £lsll to the preliminary expenses account, leaving £4286 to be carried forward. It is alleged that at a private luncheon to celebrate the opening of the rawing season, to which they were invited, they rushed the tables, and emptied cigars, fruit etc,, into their jumpers. The Habboß Bate. —At their last meeting the Timarn Borough Council declined to comply with the Harbor Board’e request to strike a harbor rate. The principal reason for this action appeared to be that the 2£ per cent, allowed by the Harbor Board Act far expenses is insufficient, but in any ease the ratepayers will have to pay the cost of making and collecting the rate, whether the Harbor Board or Borough and County Councils do the work, and if the Utter oan do it at the Last cost, they should do the work.

Gladstone), Ireland, Irish hospitality, and leaders of the churches. Sueb a lecture, well giyen by one "just back” from the Fatherland, ought to fill the building. The chair will be taken by the Rev. Tabahaki Oil.— Mr Samuel, M.H.R., having been requested by Sir J ulius Vogel to obtain for him a couple of gallons of crude petroleum from tho Taranaki district for refining purposes, got two men to eolleot that quantity from drippings which ooze from the soil near the harbour works. The two men collected on Monday between high and low water mark, and os removing some of the boulders found the oil in quantity on top of the water iu large holes. Some of the gullies seven or eight miles from town ore full ef petroleum, and no wells oan be sunk in that direction.N*w Zealand Shitpiit« Company.—We learn on good authority (says the Wanganui Herald) that the business of the New Zealand Shipping Company for the past year has proved yery satisfactory. After paying interest on the debenture stock and ell expenses, the net earnings of the Company amount to £90,000, sufficient to pay a high rate of interest on the capital 5 but the,profile will be deyoted, in accordance with a determination of tho Directors expressed at the last meeting, to pay off a deficiency due to tho improper charging of expenses to oapital. Saltation Abmt, Temnka. —Yesterday being a general holiday the Salvation Army decided on baying a “ field day ” and picnic. Early in the afternoon soldiers and friends assembled in tho Victoria Park, and, reinforced by Captain McOormiek and Lieut. Crawford and some visitors from Geraldine, proeeeded to enjoy themselves in the usual manner. Various games were indulged in, and after a Salvation meeting the proceedings terminated about five o’clock. Lieut. Crawford farewells from Geraldine next Sunday week, Nov. 10th. Captain and Mrs Bates and Cadet Milligan also farewell from Temuka at the same time. Allbhbd Muedbb.—The alleged murder esse at Omahu began in the Supreme Court, Wellington on Tuesday. Mr Cotterill for the prosecution detailed the cireumstancee of the orime, which wore very simple. Waatara Wi, the prisoner, first shot at Turanga with a bulldog revolver, hitting him in the back below the right shoulder. He tried to get his horse through the fenee when deceased ran away. Finally tho prisoner rode after him through a gap lower down, dismounted and chased Turanga, and.fired agaie, ths bullet entering through the left hip. This shot eventually proved fatal. The crime was witnessed by a number ef natives,' including two women, who, more courageous than the others, ran up and assisted Turanga in the struggle. Dr Menzies, Mr G; A. Preeoe, R.M„ To Tira Turerao, and To Whetu Te Whaura gave avidenee corroborating counsel’* opening statement, and the eourt adjourned tiU the following day.
