THE SAMOAN QUESTION.

A Californian paper says: Sir Q-eorge Grey, formerly Governor of New Zealand,favors us with a pamphlet reviewing the Samoan question and the recent relations of England and Germany, Sir George criticises British diplomacy unsparingly, and is more than complimentary towards the United States. His view clearly is that Great Britain has abdicated the leadership of the English speaking world in favour of America, It is becoming increasingly evident - that the firm stand of the United States in the Samoan dispute will have consequences extending infinitely beyond the immediate issues involved; The protection of Samoan people and of our interests in the islands would have been worth the effort of themselves, but beyond that is the value of right relations with the growing United States of Australasia. That island world is destined to be oue of the great powers of the next century, when Germany, [France, and ‘Austria will rank as Belgium and Holland do now. "We have won its friendship and respect, and we have only to keep on as we have begun to bind it closer to us than it ever was bound to its mother country. Our Government should follow up its advantage. It should be as liberal as New South Wales and New Zealand in maintaining communication in American steamers. It should puahi the construction of a Pacific cable. If we are wise we can gain in A ustralasia the commerce we have lost in Europe.
