Wellington, October 14. By way of comparison tbi Minister of Lauds has had prepared a return showing the number of sheep io the sheep districts of the colony at the end of May, 1888, and of May, 1889, also showing the increasu duriog tho latter year. It is as fol'ows: Slav 31, May 31, 1888. 1889. Auckland 360,716 381,901 N»pier 3,066,729 3,194,784 Wellington and. West Coast 2,251,551 2,372,541 MarlbqioughandKelion 772,546 804,710 Canterbury and Kaikoura 4,773,177 4,800,051 Otago 3,827,479 3,834,938 Total 15,042,198 15,388,925 The increase is—Auckland, 31,185 ; Napier, 128,055; Wellington and West Coast, 120,990; Marlborough and Nnison, 32,164 ; O interbury and Kaikoura, 26,874 ; Otago, 7459. Tha total incioaS'i is 346,727, of which 280,230 is in the North Island, and 66,497 in the Sooth Island.
