passed by the Levels Road Board to give 2d a dozen for eggs and young birds, and asking the Geraldine Board to co-operate in the destruction of small birds.—On looking up the accounts it was seen (hat in 1887 the Board paid £43 3* ll|d for a birds and eggs, and in 1888 £B7 12s lid. I —Members were decidedly of opinion I
that, some steps should be taken to destroy the small birds. Some of the members stated that the larks had beon a greater nuisance this year than any year before. It was pointed out that unless all the local bodies decided to pay for eggs and birds those paying would haye to bear the cost of the birds aod eggs from the districts that paid nothing.— L iter in the day Mr Holland moved, Mr Slack seconded, and it was carried—“ That with the object of keeping the small birds pest in check the board will offer the sum of 2d per dozen for eggs and birds daring the current season.

Thatcher, asking to be allowed to make a crossing on the road to bring the water to his property, provided the County Council gave him leave to have the water.—Request granted, provided the crossing is done to the satisfaction of the board’s overseer. From the clerk to Mount Peel Road Board, enclosing a list of work done on 1 the boundary road between the Rasgitata,, ' and Orari rivers for the past two years. ‘ 1 : overseer's report. The overseer’s report was read and dealt I with as follows: — : . “ I have the honor to report for the I information of the board as under ; j ; “ Owing (o the favorable weather very good progress has been made with the 1 work under contract. The undermnn-, 1 tiooed works have been completed during * the month, and passed for final payment;— ? Kellihet’a drain, Pleasant Valley, and r Casey’s road, Gapes’a Valley. i’he > Hilton Downs road will be completed during this week, and the roads at the . Waihi Bush have been repaired. The ' following have also 'been attended to ■ ' Gapes’s Valley road, Boundary road, k ) Hilton, Pleasant Valley, and Woodbury > roads. 5 “Ford at-Morrison’s Creek, Waihi—l., 3 have examined the creek and find that it is planted with willows and other, trees j for about 5 chains below the road. If . have had it cleared out so as to lower the water at the ford, but as the trees grow, the obstruction will still be continued^' 1 i The remedy would" be either to clear and widen the creekbed or divert the course i clear of the creekbed in Mr Stewart’s 5 land. The cost of the former would be, j say £— ; the diversion, £—. “ School Bridge, Hilton—As instructed ■ ‘ I have examined this bridge, and find the c * creekbed to be choked up with drift gravel. This is caused by the bridge pilesti having been utilised as a fence to prevent I sheep getting through under the bridge. The terrace at the east side t has been [ scoured away for about 15 feet past the, end pile of the bridge, and the side rails } are in a decayed state. The old bridge is 60 feet long, in 20 feet spans. As the 1 piles are fairly sound I should advise a t new top with single plank footway and T r wires on both sides, with one extra span j I of 20 feet. This would give 80 feet of, j bridging, which would be quite sufficient if (he creekbed is kept clear. In reference to the latter I would recommend the * gravel to be carted out on the road between Hilton and Toomey’s, and spread to repair 5 the read. i “Tenders have been invited for Wells’ road, Gould’s road, and shingling Seale’s [ road, Waitohi Flat. ( “General rate—l have given the necessary notice of the board’s intention to levy a general rate, and prepared the rate book 1 accordingly. “W. Shirrs, “ Clerk and Overseer." > Morrison’s Creek, Waihi: The clerk was instructed to see Mr Stewart, and do | the cleaning out of the creek at his ex- , pease. It was decided to do the work , ! required at the Hilton bridge. RATE. The notice given by Mr Metcalf to move the striking of a rate of £d in the £ was the next business before the board. The members were of opinion that th» rate should be made as light as possible, , or even that no rate be struck, as all the public bodies appeared to be striking rates this year, and they would come very heavy on the ratepayers. Mr Metcalf said he would be quite willing to withdraw his notice of motion, seeing that so many public bodies were striking a rate. Mr Holland said he would be quite willing for the motion to be withdrawn. Although be had seconded it he would rather that a rate was not slrnck. Mr Metcalf then withdrew his notice of motion, owing to so many public bodies., striking a rate this year. DEPUTATIONS, Messrs T. Markham and A. Eelman waited on the board and asked to have a road formed near the former’s property, Orari Bridge. It was decided to take steps to form the> same. ; Mr Ford, Belfield, waited on the board and drew their attention to a number of holes in the road near his property. The holes had been caused by the river washing in. also asked if the board were going to do anything to the road near his section.—The b'oard informed Mr Ford that they would endeavor to purchase a read to let him out on to the
m&in road. The holes to be fenced, off. OATTLB UPON HOADS. At the request of the board, *Mr Herlihy waited upon the board and waa urged to keep a sharp look out for cattle wandering, as animals were being turned ou'o now the feed was growing well. PBRQUSSON AND MBJIBDV IH’3 APPLICATION. The ehairman and Mr Metcalf having been authorised to report up on Messrs Ferguason and Meredith's 'application for a road into
the Waihi Bur.b, they reported on the same. —lt was decided to repair the road previously applied for by Mr Somerville ; Messrs Fargussou and Meredith to apply again when they wished to gat their firewood oat.
