Thb Gallib Widi Cash.—ln the Gallie will 1 base ; at Dunadin Mr Justice Williams delivered judgment at great length, refusing probate of the will which Mrs Gallie produced. His Honor remarked that of all the cases which ever came before him this was by far the mest diffioult. The question of administration will be}argued hereafter.J The <Dunedjn correspondent of the Lyttelton Times writes:—ln delivering judgment Hiß Honor said he was satisfied that in spite of! Mrs Gallie's evidence of the great mental change in Gallic, her evidence was utterly unreliable, and the family evidence shown to be untrue. The will expressed Mrs Gallie's intentions, not her imbecile husband's. The mass of Mr Fraser's witnesses, independent men, it was impossible to doubt. His decision was arrived at without regard to Lydia Ludford's evidence, for a woman who would tcharge her own mother with adultery, whether t«-uly or falsely, to get money, would stick at little ; but it it was fair to add that most of her evidence was corroborated. With Walker in tbe house, Gallie would not have left money to his wife if of sound mind. Probate was refused, and the question of administration will be argued next week'; but is sure to be granted to Winmill and Lydia Lud ford. His Honer said it was the most. diffloult case that had ever been before him. Nearly all the Duhedin lawyers were in Court to hear the decision, but few of the general public. The decision is very popular here. Shookh« Acoidemt. A shocking aeoident occurred at Green Hills, on the ■ Bluff line, on . Wednesday. There is a stone quarry at the place, anal in .oonnection therewith a small smithy. During the day tools were being sharpened, and in tempering a drum of'water was used;. This water got too hot for the purpose, and was taken outside. The men proceeded with their work, and a drill having been dressed James McKeazie plunged it into a similar drum -standing near. A violent explosion ensued, 1 and MoKenzie staggered outside where he fell dead. The left Bide of his body was oat clean away. Another man, William Ramsay, had a terrible flesh wound inflicted oh the thigh. A splinter khooked off the shin' bone of the other leg, and ho is now in the hospital. John MoKenzie escaped with slight injury. The smithy was not much damaged, but there is a hole in the floor a foot, deep where the drum stood. The explosion had a peculiar' cause. The drum was of the kind used fori softening dynamite,, arid constructed on the same plan as a glue pot, hot water being poured into the. jacket. It is surmised that; occasionally water got among the dynamite) and was poured baok into the pocket. The' plunging: of < a hot iron into the drum was therefore, disastrous: No dynamite had been used about the works for some time. James MoKenzie was a married man, with one child, and Ramsay was a resident of North. Invercargill. , {i-.!.",/;■ '<: : 0';" . ■ Caledosian Ball. -The ball held last Thuaßdny, evening .under the auspices of j the Caledonian Society in the Volunteer Drillshed, Temnka, was a great success.: I The hall was splendidly decorated with ; evergreeas, flowers, and flags, and the other arrangements were perfect. The catering was entrusted to Mr Barr, and it [ is needless,to say that iu his hands it was, all that coald be desired, . The music, of i Messrs Levens (piano) and Goodwillie; (accordian) gave every satisfaction. Mr A. j Bisset acted as M.C. in bis usual style, j The attendance, too,; was large beyond ■ anticipation, between 70 and 10 couples! ■beins; present. Amongst, these were people from Ashburton and Timaru, while there was a large contingent, from Geral-! dine. There was' a large display of tartan, worn in the shape.of sashes, ties, rosettes; 1 eto,'; : aWd : a f e'w ; • were arrayed in highly gorgeous costumes. Tbe number of ladies end gentleman were pretty evenly balanced, and wallflowers were very, rare.. Mr Campbell,, the Society's! piper, was present, and discoursed some Highland music occasionally, which sounded well in the immense .ball. After supper Mr A. M. Clark ascended tbe platform, and announoed that the presentation of the flag by Mr Quinn; would not take place that evening, as the committee desired that it should be presented publicly at the annual gathering of the Society next Boxirjg Day, when he hoped they would all be present. A long and varied programme of dances was gone through, the lively and picaresque Scotch dances predominating, and the proceed- J jugs came to a dose between. 4 and 5 a.m. I •
