Ihe Land xtill, which has been the subject of much discussion in the Lower House in consequence of the Council’s amendments, has finally passed. Mr Gannon, the well-known sportsman, has retired from the turf, and his horses have been sold by auction. Merriment was purchased by Mr Greenaway, of New Zealand, tor 800 guineas. The Australian Peer was sold for £6OO, The following were passed in -Melos 1200 guineas, Wycombe 700, and Arsenal 500. Mr Berry, an old and wealthy resident in New South Wales,' has bequeathed £20,000 to the Presbyterian Church of the colony; £IOO,OOO to found an hospital in the town of Berry, named after him; £IOO,OOO to St. Andrew’s University, Kdinburgh. The Land Bill is jeopardised in consequence of the action of the Legislative Council in making several amendments which are of a selfish class and spirit. The House of Assembly sat all night considering the amendments and rather than sacrifice the measure they agreed to most of them.
