THE NEW BISHOP.
.The Diocesan Synod, after relegating the choice of Bishop of Christchurch to a committee to report upon, adopted their recommendation to elect Archdeacon Churchill Julius, of Ballarat, to the sacred office. The voting was ; ayes 45, noes 2 ; laity, ayes ■B6, uoes I. A cablegram was sent to Archdeacon, Julius, advising him ol: his election, and he replied, accepting the position. ~ A contemporary gives the following particulars in reference to the new Bishop:— The Ven. Churchill Julius, Archdeacon of Ballarat, and now Bishopelect of Christchurch, was born at Richmond, Surrey, and is about forty years of age. He was educated at -Blackheath G-rammar School, King’s College, London, and Worcester College, Oxford. He took his B.A. degree in 1860, and M.A. in 1873. He was ordained deacon by the Bishop of Norwich in 1871, and appointed curate of St. Giles’, Norwich. In 1873 he became curate of South Brent, Somersetshire, and in 1875 vicar of Shapwick-cum-Ashcott, Somersetshire, The two parishes together possess a population of about 1150, and the living is set down as being worth £B2O a year with a house. While there he was appointed Assistant Diocesan Inspector of Schools in the diocese of Bath and Wells. In 1878 he was inducted as vicar of Holy Trinity, Islington, a well known London Church, capable of seating 3000 people. The population of the parish is set down at 10,398. and the’ living at £465. His predecessor at this church was, we believe, Dr Billing, now suffragan Bishop of Bedford. In this position Mr Julius had ample scope for exhibiting the energy and ability of his character, and it was greatly to the regret of the large congregation to whom he administered when, in 1884, he left for Australia to become Vicar of Christ Church, Ballarat, and Archdeacon of the diocese. He now holds those offices, with that of Canon of* tbe Cathedral, On being entrusted by the Bishop of Ballarat with the organisation of the Archdeaconry, he at once made his mark by the success with whibh he carried out the work, his influence being most marked over more than eighty churches. It may be added that Archdeacon Juhus married a daughter of Col. Rowlandson, of Bournemouth, England, and has a family of seven children. Tha Bishop-elect bears the reputation of being a very eloquent and popular speaker and preacher. He has a humorous bent in his composition, and frequently even in his sermons, it is said, raises a smile among the congregation by the quaintness of his illustrations.
