This meeting commenced at the racecourse, Orari, on Wednesday. The attendance was not large. The majority of those present appeared to arrive by the north and south trains, the rain which tell in the morning evidently deterring a good many people from attending. Eain had fallen heavily for the. previous two days, but on Thursday morning it was seen that the day, although cloudy, was dry overhead. About 10 o’clock, however, a heavy shower fell, but from that out the day was fine. Owing to the necessary timber for the Grand Stand not coming to hand in time, the club were not able to get the damage done to that structure by the recent gale repaired in time, hut a tarpaulin was stretched over it, which served the purpose for the day very well, New stables and weighingroom had been, erected in place of those destroyed by the heavy gale ou J
the 9fch inst., and the fences then blown down were repaired. The effects of the gale were disastrous to the club, as tbe damage done will cost about £7O to repair. The arrangements made by the committee proved very satisfactory, the programme being got through without a hitch. Most of the eyents were got off at the time advertised. Mr J. Meikle succeeded in most eases in getting his fields away to very good starts. Mr T. McAuliffe had the licensed booths, and appeared to do a fair trade. Messrs 1 Nation and Egberts bad a totalisator on the ground, and were fairly well patronised. Tbe field got away to a very uneven start, Mexico and All Fours showing to tbe front at once; Coming into the straight All Fours took the lead, and he and Mexico took tbe hurdle together, and continued to make tbe pace till at the far side of the course the pace began to tell on Mexico, and. Meada came with a rush, but was soon disposed ot by Tornado, Cymaro wresting . second place from Swampben. Dividend, £2 16s. Tims, 3min. 6sec. All-Aged County Plate, a handicap of of 30 soys., the sacond horse to receive ■ = 5 sovs, from the stakes. For horses the bona fide property of persons residing within the County of Geraldine for three months before the race. Liberator had the inside running, and got stray with a alight advantage, whlob he kept till half np the straight, when Marat went to: the front, and won by a length. O- Webb’s Ruby (94) also ran. The field got away to a very eVen start, ! and (belittle grey immediately showed in front. He was never pushed, and won easily by a good three lengths. Handicap Notel Race, of 40 sovs. 1 mile. The winner to be the property of the club, and submitted to auction after the race. 43. Mr A. McLeod’s Hollowback, 7stslb ... ... (Burns) I 99. Mr W. While’s Relief, Bst 61b (Owner) 2 32. Mr S. Alexander’s, Lop Ear, 7«t 71b (Cox) 3 Wire In, 7at 121 b, also started. This was one of the beat races of the day. Relief showed at tba front at the fall of the flag, but Hollowbaok soon challenged him, and a splendid race resulted between these two horses. Turning into the straight whips ware out on both of them, and a clinking race took place, Relief, who was leading, being beaten on the post by a very short head. Time, Imia.'dSfaeb.' Dividend, £4 7s, The winner was afterwards bought in at £ls. Weitbr Handicap, of 40 sovs., 5 sovs. from tba stake to go to the second horse. 6 furlongs. The winner of the Cup to carry 101 b penalty. 59. Mr F. H. Popham Alcinous, 9at 12lb ... ... (Sheenan) 1 52. Mr Q. W. Kosewarne’s Cymaro, SstlOlb (Owner) 2 91, Messrs M, and 0. Hobbs’s Road Malal, 9at 21b ... (McDonald) 3 Sir Julius, Red Ensign, and Miss Laoy also started. The field tailed out soon after the start, and Road Metal and Alcinous made the running, the latter eventually winning by a length an'da-half. Cymaro and Road Metal made a splendid struggle for second place, finishing very closely together.; Time, Imin, SOseo. Dividend, £3 Bs. SECOND DAT. The weather yesterday was very ranch worse than oo the previous day. Heavy rain was falling in the morning, and con- , tinned to do so for soma time, but even-: tnally cleared. The saddling paddock and grounds were soon in a very bad state. The club had taken the troub>e to haye (he course rolled for several hours in the morning, but after the first race, in which eight horses took part, it was very heavy and greasy. The following are the results:— Handicap Hurdle Race, of 50 sovs. Over 6 flights of hurdles. About 1J miles. 67. Mr W. 0. Rutherford’s Tornado, 10st 3 b (ineluding lOlbs over) (Sheenan) I 22, Mr McDonald’s Waiteka, lOat 2lb, (Dunn) 2 45. Mr H. L. Johnson’s Tenakoe, Bst 9 b (Walls) 3 i (2) Playboy, (20) Tramp, (6) Doubtful, (1) Kelpie, and College Boy also started, The flag fell to an excellent start, Tenakoe immediately showing in front, the other two placed horses in close attendance.
These three made the most of the racing, noa* of the others ever being dangerous. 4f Tornado eventually won by about 2 ; lengths. Dunn secured second place for Waireka by a piece of good riding. Russell’s Swampheo, 16st s'b , (A. G. Cox) I lor A. McLeod’s Meada, 31st (Corbett) 2 'Little Arthur and All Fours were scratched. Swamphen got away with a slight advantage, which she increased to several lengths. At the back of the course in the second round Meada made her effort, but could not eome on even terms with the winner, who won Time, 4mia 35sec. There were no invea- ; tors on the totalisator. Novel Flat Race Handicap, of 50 sots., 1 mile; the winner to be the property of the club and to be submitted to auction after the race. 104, Mr G. W. Roatwarne’a Cymaro, Bst 101 b ... ...(T, Buddicombe) 1 45. Mr W. White’s Relief, Bst 51b (White) 2 24. Mr S. Baler's Wire In, 7st 91b, (Holmes) 3 (22) Lop Ear also started. Relief got the best of a poor start, and kept the lead till at the distance post, where Cymaro ran up to and passed him, winning easily, v Time, Imin. 57eec. Dividend, £llßs. Erin-go-Bragb was scratched. This was a capital race, th* little grey leading by a short distance oil the way till within fifty yards ef the post, when, he fell away, and Saltan won easily by two or three lengths. Won easily. Time, 6min 7secs. Dividend, £2lls. Owing to the great difference of form shown by Minnie oh the; previous day’s performance a protest was entered against her. A meeting of the steward’s was held, and it was decided te uphold the protest, and pay the stakes over to the owner of the second horse, Muckeross* The latter paid a dividend of £l6 103. District Handicap of 35 sovs, 5 sovs from the stake to go to the second horse. 1 mile. For horses owned and trained in the district three months prior to the meeting. The district exA tends from the south bank of the Rakaia to, the north bank ef the Horse Raege, Oamaru, 52. Messrs M, and O. Hobbs’s Road Metal, 6st 121 b ... (W. Hobbs) 1 19. Mr G. W. Rosewatne’s Cymaro, 7st 21b ... (T. Buddicombe) 2 19, Mr H. Lambert’s Sir Julius, Sat 7lb, . (McMorram) 8 Little Shamrock, Doubtful, and Meada also started. At the start Sir Julius ran to the front, with Cymaro and Road Metal olbso up. Turning into the straight the field closed up. Little Shamrock, who bad apparently been blocked on the far side of the course, coming well to the fore. Road Metal, however, was not to be denied, and won cleverly by a couple of lengths, a good finish for second taking place between Cymaro and Sir Julius. Time, Imin 53seca. Dividend, £3 Is. Fltin* Handicap, of 45 sovs,, 6 furlongs. Mr F. fl. Popbam’s Alcinous, 7st 121 b , (Holmes) 1 Mr W. Russell’s Erin-go-Bragb, 9st 21b (Brown) 2 Red Ensign, Catamount and Loo also started.
