A sad fatality occurred at Kairanga, Manawatu, on Friday. A girl of five years and a boy of two years, the latter a son of Mr Burmeister, were playing iu the road, when the boy fell into a ditch and was drowned before assistance arrived. All efforts to resuscitate the body proved fruitless. Mr Good, the Mayor of Eangiora, has been presented with a silver cradle, to commemorate the birth of a daughter during his present mayoralty. A quantity of imported boots and drapery were detained by the Customs at Lyttelton and removed to Christchurch. There is said to he a dispute between the importers and the Customs as to the duty. The electric light at Eeeftou is said to be a great success. The installation has now been completed three months, and there has been no hitch occur; The Maori abduction case was commenced at the Auckland Police Court on Tuesday. Nothing fresh was elicited. The girl under examination confessed that she was not ill-treated. Messrs Williamson, Garner, and Musgrove have refused to allow amateurs to perform any of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Operas for some time. The Christchurch Amateur Opera Company intend testing this decision.
