Information Las been received by Lieutenant-Celonel Shepherd that l Major-General Edwards is to visit Auckland, and will inspect the volunteers on the 16th October. It is probable that a sham fight will be held. The barque Eollo, which left Kaipara on August 22nd for London, with a cargo of timber, has put back to Auckland, having met with such heavy weather that her deck cargo rolled about dangerously. The Board of Governors of the Auckland College and Grammar School have agreed that in future no examinations shall be held on Saturdays, on account of the difficulties placed in the way of Jewish scholars. The Ormondville hotel was burned down on Monday night. Fortunately there was no wind and adjoining stores escaped. The hotel had just changed hands.
