A SENSATIONAL STORY.
Sydney, Sept, 21. The Telegraph this morning states that a man imp’icated in the murder of Dr Cronin was a passenger from San Francisco by the Mariposa, which arrived here on Wednesday night. The police it appears received a cablegram from the American police authorities ordering them to watch the passengers, and offering a reward of twenty-five thousand dollars for the arrest of the suspected person. Upon the arrival of the steamer the detectives went on board to make a search, and upon their approach the suspected individual locked his cabin door and declined *o come out when ordered by the detectives to do so. He threatened to shoot anyone breaking in, and remained in a state of siege all Thursday, when be succeeded in eluding the Vigilance of the officers and escaped. Sept. 22.
The Daily Telegraph’s story of a man implicated in Dr Cronin’s murder arriving here is a canard. It appears that the detectives went oh board the steamer in search of an absconder, and wished to see & passenger who bad acted in a rather eccentric manner during the voyage. When he saw the police officers be retreated to bis cabin and threatened to shoot them if he was interfered with. The passenger in question remained in his cabin some time, and eventually reached shore, having successfully eluded the vigilance of the police.
