The Gairlbcb still lies on the north spit at Waitara river, but she has been hauled closer to the channel, and Captain McArthur is confident he will get her off on the spring tide. A six roomed house at Ferry Eoad, Christchurch, belonging to W. Bryan, was burned down on Saturday morning. Insurances : House, £250 ; furniture, £IOO. A French gum digger named Francis was drowned at Auckland on Saturday while proceeding in an open boat to a field where he was working. The weather being so squally his mates would not accompany him, and half-an-hour after he left the boat capsized in a squall. A fire broke out in Johnstown and White’s flax mills at Opaki, Wellington, on Monday morning, which destroyed 18 bales of dressed fibre, the scutcher, and two other sheds, and all the machinery. The loss is £3OO, and there is no insurance.
