S.C. HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.
The monthly meeting of this board was held yesterday. Present—Messrs D, M. Reas (chairman), Jackson, Moore, Sloe, McLaren, and Dr Lovegrove. Mr Jacksen again brought up tbe question of the children at the barracks, and said that ho would like to see a change made, so that their maintenance would, if possible, cost the board less.—The chairman agreed, and reported that one person bad taken a child out at 6s per week.— Mr Moore said a committee of ladies bad been formed at Geraldine and Woodbury, and Mr Slee said the ladies committee worked well in Waimate. —lt was decided that Dr Lovegrove and Mr Jackson should be empowered to arrange for the formation of a committee of ladies in Timaru. 1
The secretary reported that he had sent ■a letter to Mr P. Daly demanding payment of the hospital expenses of bis 3on, and adding that if he did not pay legal proceedings would be taken.—Mr Pi Daly wrote under date Hilton, Sept. Ist, stating that he had received the bill demanding £ll 15s for medical treatment for his son, and stating that'he (Mr Daly) thought it was very hard to ask him to pay that amount, or even any, as his son was crippled for life. He asked that his case be taken into favorable consideration, and referred to the chairman, Mr Jackson, and the secretary as having seen ths After discussing the matter, it was decided that proceedings should not be stayed—that the case be allowed to go to Court—members considering that the case should be thoroughly enquired into. The secretary reported that in accordance with instructions he had summoned three persons for money they owed to the hospital. He added that there were about 50 persons owing money altogether. —Mr Moore mentioned that a man who owed an account bad offered to pay £1 per, month, and read a letter dealing with the subject.—lt was decided to accept the offer.
The chairman reported shipping off a recipient of aid to Melbourne, and that from a letter received she was doing well. She had taken one child with her.
Several applications for relief were laid before the board, Messrs Slee, Moore, and others giving evidence upon them, and rations in proportion were granted in each case.
Tha secretary said that the number of applicants for charitable aid were increasing in Timaru, and Mr Slee said that in Waimate it was the other way. The chairman reported that he had arranged for the interment of two persons, the subject of a recent inquest in Timaru, and his action was approved. The surgeon reported that one day lately the main drain had got choked up with shingle, the hospital buildings thereby getting fall of sewer gas. He also slated that be had written Home for some information of a certain special kind of window fastenings. The chairman reported that very little damage bad been done to the hospital by the recent gale and that the new fence between the hospital grounds and the domain was being erected satisfactorily. Mr Jowsey, the Steward, reported that the new drying room as put up in the manner patented by Mr Ashbury, of Dunedin, was a great success. Mr Moore brought up the question of charges to patients. He said members were aware that the charge made was 5s per day, but that it had been agreed to accept 4s per day if the money was paid promptly, If default were made, the person owing money was still to be subject to pay the 5s per day. He thought the proposal was not really fair to all. He had heard of several cases in which it had been proposed to pay off the amounts owing gradually. After some discussion the matter dropped without any resolution being passed; Accounts amounting to £437 6s 4d were passed for payment. —The chairman reported that from a statement compiled for the eight months ended the 31st August their expenditure for this year hau been £1655 Os lid. For the same period of 1888 the expenditure had been £I7BB 15s lid, thus leaving a balance of £133 15s in favor of 1889. The meeting then terminated.
