A COMPLAINT. Mr Yallender said that several ratepayers had complained to him that favoritism had been shown in regard to the work done by the board. The wealthy ratepayers had been treated with consideration denied to poorer men. He did not desire to cast reflections upon the previous actions of the board or upon their overseer, but it had been stated that Mr Brown had had what was {practically private property shingled at the board’s expense, the track from his garden gate to his stable on the opposite side of Rayner street having been metalled.
Mr Brown said that this was the first intimation that he had received of any favor from the board. Approaches to his gate had been shinglod at his own expense. He thought, moreover,’ tint complaints of this descripwu should be laid in a formal manner.
e The overseer said that ho was • cognisant of the complaints made, and 1 asked leave to refer to his report of ® Sept. 12, 1888. It appeared from the report, which had been approved by f tbe board, that the sum of £2 8s had t been expended in repairs on North s Town Belt, making a water-table 1 fronting MessrsiMarsball’s and Wills’s r properties, widening approach to the 0 ford at lavender’s bridge, making 3 cutting at west end of Princess street; ‘ possibly 8s had been expended near a Mr Brown’s premises.—The board ) were satisfied that the charge was a 1 frivolous one, and no further action : was taken. ; OVERSEER'S REPORT. ' [ The overseer’s report was read and ! dealt with as follows: — , “ Gentlemen,—! have the hencr ta submit the following report upon work of the past month : “in accordance with instructions the I North Town Belt haa been repaired. The ] holes and broken places from the railway to Wilkin street have been patched, and from the latter street to Maude street, a distance of 36 chains, a water-table has been out. I found by measurement that this road had been very irregularly laid off, the width of the adjoining bolt varying in some places as much as five feet. This has been adjusted and the road straightened. In sundry hollow places soil has been carted, but more is required to make tbe road in really good order. It,is, however, now fit for summer traffic. Due attention has been paid tp;drainaga, Tbe soil in John street has been carted and disponed in various places along the road er footpath. The water-table from John street to the cemetery has been completed, . aod a cutting made at Murray street. Both water-tables in Maude street, from the gravel reserve to Denmark street, have been cleaned, sod also those in Alexander street. Crossings have also been made to the side streets where required. The weather has not been altogether favorab a for this work, ae tbe ground has been very hard. 1 considered it better to proceed with it in view of morn unsettled weather. The approaches to the footplank at creek in iStudholme street have been improved, and a substantial footbridge placed over the creek at Hornbrook; street, the timber utilized being two planks formerly ia use at a spot lower down, but not upon the read line or properly fixed. Sundry small repairs have also been carried out in Wilkin street. Tenders have been invited for formation in Gamack and Princes streets. The cleaning of the creek will shortly have to be attended to. As the majority of tbe main streets are new in order for traffic 1 would suggest that in future the cleaning of water-tables be let by contract at per chain,—l am, etc., “A. W. Gaze.” CREEK LANDS. Mr Brown asked fer information re the letting of land around the creek, and, after explanation, moved—“ That the clerk write to the Waste Land Board on the subject.” Mr Frew seconded the motion, ■ which was carried. ; STUDHOLME STREET AND BRIDGE. The overseer was authorised to effect certain improvements in Studholme street, in response to a petition ■ laid before the Board at their previous meeting. He submitted an estimate ; of the cost of a light traffic bridge over ( the creek at' the village settlement, ; and was authorised to invite tenders j for same, to be considered at next ■ meeting. , THE RAILWAY GATES, The clerk stated that a petition was • in circulation praying the railway i authorities either to remove the gates ; upon the railway line at Denmark ; Street, or have them kept open to a later hour, and he had been requested , to get the board’s approval of same. The board were unanimous in their approval. The closing of the gates as at present was a nuisance. O’Mara, £l3 9s lOd (informal). —On the ; ’ motion of Mr Ashwell, seconded by ■ Mr Frew, the tender ©f Douglas and Washington was accepted. \ MISCELLANEOUS.
